I guess your diesel would have gotten better mileage locked in 3rd gear turning 3k RPM to do 40mph with a horse trailer attached?
Latest word from the dealer is that when they went to replace the shift solenoid they found metal shavings in the pan, so they are pulling the tranny to find the source.

What's the build date on your truck? Mine is 02/07.

Yeah, I forgot that he had the V10. A diesel would have gotten better mileage towing than that, even stuck in third. I towed a car trailer from Chicago to Nashville carrying a BMW 750iL and still got 14 MPG and couldn't even tell that the trailer was there.

Very true. And if you think a stock 6.4L gets better mileage, think again. I drove a 6.4L for a week prior to buying my V10. It got 13mpg in my usual routine. My V10 gets ~12.5mpg in the same conditions.
And I see plenty of folks every weekend that tow similar horse trailers to mine with stock 6.4Ls. They get about 10mpg towing.
Anyway, the truck is still in the shop with no updates.
