I just pulled out my window sticker, and the diesel engine is a $6895 option listed right on the sticker. Mine is a Job 1 truck. I just went to the Ford site and it's still a $6895 option. If your truck was only $4000 less, then I would guess that your truck has more options than that diesel did. If it truly was only $4000 more for the diesel, than you should have jumped on it because that's a $17,000 engine under the hood.

The powerstroke upgrade is about 7k with the auto tranny stacked on top of it for about 9k total.

It isnt a cheap upgrade, but if you are going to spend all of that cash on a truck might as well get what you want. Diesels are great engines that will last you a long time if you take care of them. The 6.4 has more stock horsepower and torque than any of the previous models, just with the added headache of the emissions equipment.

If you get a 250, i would get the diesel, but different strokes for different folks (yes that was a pun)
they sure dont seem like they have more power i can turn off my programmer and still leave a 6.4

7.3L(444ci) - 250 hp and 525 lb·ft tq
6.0L(365ci) - 325 hp and 570 lb·ft tq
6.4L(388ci) - 350 hp and 650 lb·ft tq

I was just stating the specs.
Did the 6.0's have the drive-by-wire accelerator? That is being traced as a big cause for turbo lag

They're all drive by wire, diesel's don't have a throttle body.

i guess i mean the 3 pin drive by wire technology or something like that. The 2008+ had some sort of new drive by wire technology relating to three positions or three pins or something. It was one of the new features mentioned to all the mechanics as a difference between 6.0's and 6.4's

I bet the stock 6.4L outpulls a stock 6.0L...street race-wise I have raced both for fun. Let me put it this way...the 6.4L seemed a stronger threat

From the Powerstroke owners I've talked to, the 6.4 pulls better than the 6.0, but all of them miss their 7.3s.

Oh, the 7.3L...when men were still men and diesels were still diesels! The 6.4L is kinda' like a "metrosexual" diesel.

i would only hope that the 6.4 does something better than the 6.0 with as much fuel as it consumes. it needs to do something with it besides just burn it off at the exhaust tip and catch stuff on fire.

Surprised no 6.4L guys have piped in. I have been in both and the 6.4L seems a bit stouter, but...maybe it's a 'seat in the pants' FEEL and not reality...can it truly be????

Even a little drag racin' (stock now!!) the 6.4L came closer....

asides from the emissions junk and the mileage, i like the 6.4. Ive been in a 7.3 as well and i prefer the 6.4. THe 7.3 sure sounded a lot manlier, but the 6.4 feels like its got more in it, stock. Ive never been in a 6.0.

Regardless, moving to a turbodiesel from a 5.4 gasser was a huge change.

Where are you getting $17K from???

If the engine is worth that much, why would Ford sell them as a $6800 option?

Basically he is probably sayin' that if you were to buy the engine outright it would cost about $17k and I believe that. Look how much long block modern engines (crate motors) cost out of Summit catalog.

The reason it's 'only' a $6800 option is that Ford (well...Navistar) mass produces the engine and the cost is absorbed in the entire package of tens of thousands of trucks.

Doh! Do you think that the 5.4L engine is free?

That's $6800 MORE than the price of a 5.4L engine. I guess you think that since the V10 is only a $600 option, that you could buy one for $600?

Hell, the fuel injectors on the 6.4L engine cost $900 each...that's $7200 just in fuel injectors!
