99 7.3 no start issue

99 7.3 no start issue

My dad pretty much parked his truck a couple months ago after he acquired a very cheap Daily driver. There were zero issues leading up to it. Now he just wanted to get it going and it wont start. There are no codes and there is tons of fuel pressure to the fuel filter which was just replaced as well. The truck is cranking good and hard because we just charged the batteries. When we first tried cranking on it it kind of fired and died soon after. Where does a guy go from here? It has about 110,000 miles on it.

Put a battery charger on it for a day or two and try it again. I have found out lately that the trucks will start to get hard to start as the batteries get weak.

we took the batteries out and put each of them on the charger for a day each and had booster cables on it when we tried to crank it.

How long did you crank on it when you tried to start it? Also try and cycle the key a few times and try and get the cylinder as warm as you can with the glow plugs. The only reason I am suggesting this is because I had to do this yesterday after the dealer parked my truck outside in -13* weather and thats the only way I could get the truck to start.

Are you getting a wait to start light? How long are you keying it on before trying to start? Is the fuel bowl full?

yes, tried cycling it 3 times, and yes. The block heater was also plugged in as well.

I am pretty sure that the injectors in these trucks need high pressure oil to run the injectors and If there is not enough pressure to run the injectors the truck wont run. You may have air in the fuel because the truck sat so long and all of fuel bled back to the tank. Just for grins have you checked the fuses in the fuse block for a blown PCM fuse of fuel bowl heater fuse?

Getting a wait to start light? And fuel bowl full?


dsq, blown PCM fuse = no wait to start light. I found that one out the hard way.

Thanks, nice thing to know in case my truck wont start sometime. By the way my truck is sitting at the dealer again but I am not going to hijack Gotts thread with my problem.

Continuing the hijack until he replies... 6.0s are different from the 7.3s, so I'm not sure if that applies to you or not.

I dont know if it does either but the more I now and learn the better I am. I picked the truck up on Thursday and put 320 miles on it and then on Friday I take off again for another trip and had the cruise on going up a slight hill and I noticed the truck is working harder than normal so I turn off the cruise and romp on the go pedal and it wont go over 2200 RPM. I dont know what the heck is going on with the truck now so they have it again.

I know a bad Cam Position Sensor will cause a no start on a 7.3 but I dont know if one can go bad from sitting. I would check the wiring harness under the hood to see if a mouse made a home some where and fouling up a sensor or chewed on some thing.

You still haven't said if the fuel bowl is full or not. Also, I see you're in Canada land. It could be gelled fuel.

yes the fuel bowl is full. The fuel in the bowl was not gelled at all. The truck went in for that cam position sensor recall this summer. Where abouts is the sensor located on it? I'll go take a look for something obvious like loose connection or frayed wires..
