142k on the clock then you better start saving your pennies for a rebuild on the trans. The 4R100 in stock form has about a 100k shelf life depending on working conditions. A factory reman is about $4k, a BTS is only a few hundred more. With that many miles you'll want to check the conditions of the front wheel bearing unit hubs. Being a 2000 its most likely got 4 wheel ABS which makes the hubs about $400 each. You will also want to check the ball joints on the front axle. If they are bad its a weekend job to do them yourself and I've heard quotes from dealers for about $1000 to do them. Also check the coolant. It needs to have either gold coolant or it must have SCAs added to it. To check SCA levels in the coolant you must buy test strips from a Navistar dealer. If the coolant hasn't been changed (should have been at 100k) then plant on that. My local Ford dealer charges $175 to do a flush and change to gold coolant. You may also want to think about doing a trans flush as well as a fluid change on the rest of the systems as well unless someone can provide written documentation on when they were changed. This goes for front/rear axles, transfer case, power steering, and brake fluid. The brakes on these trucks tend to accumulate alot of water over their life if they're not flushed. Pretty much everything should have been done if a true 100k service was done. Do NOT take the dealers word for this, make them show you it in writing.
As to the body of the truck inspect the area along the lower weatherstripping on the bottoms of the doors for rust. Don't just look around the seal, actually look under it. These are notorious for plugging up and not letting water drain out and rusting. Also look up around the inside of the rolled edge on the fender lips.
No you said you started a deal on the 2nd truck and it was then sold out from under you? Did you leave a deposit check or any kind of money (usually $1k) down on it? Had you signed an agreement to purchase the truck? If you went on just a handshake or a word then you were in no way wronged and the dealer had nothing guaranteeing them that you'd return to buy the truck as you said. If it was me and I had nothing in hand I'd have sold it too. In the used auto world money and signatures is what seals deals. Now if you had signed a deal or left money then yes it was shady and you did the correct thing.

if it has 5.13 or 4.56 not so much as if it has 3.55 or 3.73 gears the lower gears the better it will be for your mileage
Hey, I am just down the road in Shelbyville and would be happy to go check some trucks out with you some time. I love spending other people's money
I've got a 2003 7.3L 4x4 Lariat CC SB with turbo-back MBRP, AFE Stage 2, DP Tuner, 6 inch lift, 37" MTRs on 17" Welds.
I have been trying to find a few guys to go in on a biodiesel processor as well if you are interested.....
Drop me a PM or email if interested and I'll get you my number.
