3500 dodge dually

I been looking for diesel trucks and I came a cross a 2006 dodge dually with a cummin diesel engine, what do you guys think about this brand of trucks. I know cummin is the best engine out there but what about dodge.

Thanks in advance.

Hate the truck, love the engine. That is before the 08s. My first choice now for a new truck is a Dodge.

I know there are so many people here who love the Cummins diesel. I don't think you can go wrong there.

Dodge, however, leaves much to be desired, in my opinion. To me, Dodges feel cheap and crappy. It's up to you, though.

Good luck.

Ok, I'm a Ford LOVER but since I'm looking for the best engine out there I started looking for dodge, I'm don't like the truck as much as ford but the engine is great.
What do you guys think the truck overall, meaning movements, tranny, electrical system, 4X4, warranty, etc, etc, etc..

BTW what is the MPG of this truck?

Not interest in chevy truks, I really hate that truck.

Powerstroke73, thanks a lot for your help, everythime I ask something your there for help, if I don't get a nice deal I might end getting 7.3L powerstroke, hate to get an older truck but what I'm looking is something reliavle.

Thanks guys

I wish ford used that cummins, I'd have to by one then. The dodge...great motor w/ a pos tranny, and then you gotta live with the fact you went from Ford too dodge. Think I might have to find ya an let the air out of your tires

Hi wellcraft. I work for Cummins so I am a little biased. Yes that 5.9 is a great engine. As far as the rest of the truck...well...its a toss up. Most of the Dodge owners I have talked to said that the biggest complaint is the tranny. We see our fair share of dodge's in the shop. Mainly maintenance, and fuel pump issues on the second gen 5.9 ( vp44 fuels system ). That '06 is a totally different fuel system ( common rail ) and is very reliable so don't worry. Anyways, they keep bringing them to us because they just don't trust anyone else. These trucks of course are out of warranty.
Now, ALL warranty has to go to the dodge dealer. There was a deal made between Cummins and Dodge that all engine warranty has to be done at the dodge dealership. This was not the case a couple of years ago. The dealerships would farm the engine warranty to us.
Hell, we cannot even talk to our own ecm now if its in a newer Dodge.

Sorry to rant on. In my opinion, the perfect combo would be a Cummins in a Superduty. You can get the F550 and higher with our engine. If I were you I'd get that '06 truck now, our newer engines have more emission features ( pcv system, aftertreatment, particulate filters..etc. Not that that's a bad thing, but its a first model year so all the bugs are not going to be worked out.
Damn I could be long winded.... Sorry guys.

Ruger 43 thanks alot for your opinion, I didn't know they were having problems with the tranny however I wont be using this truck at its full capacity, I just that I wll be pulling a 7500# boat and also a TT maybe a little bit hevier and I'm the kind of person who preffer to have more than less or equal.
I ordered a 2007 F150 and cancelled it because I now know that I was going to be borderline.

Honestly the reason I'm not looking for the newer f350 is becasue I been reading that the engines arn't so reliavle like they use to be, don't get me wrong I preffer a ford truck (I'm a ford guy) for now I'm looking for a reliavle truck.

I read somewere that some people get 22 mpg with a 2500 and a cummin engine and 18 town, thats preety goog millage, by any chance do you know what is the MPG on this truck?

Thanks again for the reply

'08s are a brand new 6.7L, but based off the ole 5.9L, and not a wild card like fords new 6.4L TT.

For a weekend I test drove an '05 5.9L six speed, loved the motor, loved the tranny, hated the truck. Just seemed too plasticy and didn't like the seats or the door layout.

Yep, it's the 5.9, just bored and stroked. Everything else is pretty much the same. Even our repair manuals have the 2 combined under one heading " 5.9/6.7 " for all t-shooting and repair.

5.9 bore and stroke: 4.02" x 4.72"

6.7 bore and stroke: 4.21" x 4.88"

The F550 is not available with a Cummins. That only has a PSD or V10 engine options. The availability of a Cummins comes into play in the F650 and F750 straight trucks.

The pre 03 Dodge trucks had poor auto trannies from the factory, however like the 4R100 you can build them fairly stout. The 03+ autos I think have been more reliable, but can still fail if not watched. Through the years the best bet has been the 5spd, and now the 6spd manual. If you're planning on keeping this truck more than a few years, or getting an older truck, I would really look hard for a manual trans. This goes for Ford as well. My auto should hold up to what I'm doing well, but I've put about $2500 into it. Usually that kind of build is going to run around $3500, but I got a few smokin deals.

I agree with Adrians assessment of the new Dodge trucks from the few I've driven. Though given the 08 SD I can live with alot of plastic. Just for reference the 08 SD trucks got an all new (very ugly) front end and a new interior. In addition you've got the new 6.4L which is a complete flop. I've always owned Ford, but if I had to buy new now it would be Dodge. As for the mileage, its a little on the high side even for a Cummins so don't plan on that. I'm not saying its not possible, but plan for under 20mpg highway and around 16mpg city. A 7.3L is going to much less than this. They'll top out at around 18-19mpg highway and around 14mpg city.

IMO, the best setup now would be to find an 02 or an 03 SD (to get the minor interior upgrades) that was a southern 2wd truck. Preferably finding one that was a manual with a blown diesel engine. From there get a reman 12V Cummins, or a 24V with a P-pump (big $$$$$) and an adapter plate to run the ZF6 trans. Change the 2wd ZF6 to a 4wd ZF6 with a manual transfer case. Then set up a 78/79 F350 king pin D60 with a custom coil suspension and run a matching 10.25 rear with a rear disk brake conversion. You could always go 4 link on the front and rear with air bags for something really trick and smooth riding. This would give you a good newer model SD truck with a durable manual trans, good ZERO mileage Cummins engine which is capable of alot of cheap hp, and the benefits of the old serviceable bearing axles with king pins instead of ball joints. I actually added this setup up once and for under $20k (not counting my time involved) I could have a truck like this. And for the price of a new truck $35-40k I could easily have a 700hp monster with bullet proof running gear. Honestly if my 7.3L ever takes a dump this is what I'll do with the exception of the auto trans, just because of what I've got wrapped up in it.

My mistake, wasn't sure if it was the 550 or 650 model that you could start getting a Cummins.
