Question Help! Trying to decide between a F150 and a F250

I am thinking of upgrading to a Supercrew F150.
All decked out with auto and a 5.4L and the associated goodies(Power everything, AC, Etc.) the truck is up around $28K.

A friend just bought a 2001 F250 with the V-10 and a 5 spd, it has power everything, AC, supercab, 142"? bed, Etc. and he only paid $24K for it.

Would I be better off just going with the F250?
I could not find any MPG stats with the V-10 W/Manual so i do not know what kind of MPG it will get unloaded highway cruising but I can't imagine it is too much worse than a Supercrew 5.4?

I do need to pull a 3,000 LB trailer occasionally, which my F150 now does fine, and I figure the F250 would be overkill for but, I figure the extra power would always be nice.

Can someone talk me into or out of this???

Thanks!

Most importantly, choose the one you want and will be happy driving.

You won't find any mileage ratings for SD trucks because they aren't subject to CAFE measurements. The mileage varies depending on driving style, equipment/options, gears, transmission, etc. I get 10/14 (see sig.)

1997 4x4 Expedition- 4.6L, true dual exhaust w/Ravin DI/DO, K&N air filter, SuperChip, airbox mods, Edelbrock shocks, 285/75R16 BFG ATs, 2000 F150 "XLT" wheels, 4.10 gears, Auburn LS, Clarion In-dash CD player, Smitty Bilt push bars and nerf bars.

2000 4x4 F250 SD XLT SuperCab SWB- 6.8L, Offroad Pkg, Camper Pkg, 4.30LS, Tape & CD player, Remote Keyless Entry, Sliding back glass, tinted windows, 265/75R16 OWL tires, Smittybilt nerf bars & Line-X bedliner.

Seeing as what you're towing can be safely towed by the SuperCrew, your basic decision will really come down to "What do YOU want?" Yes, I think you can get into a SuperDuty for less than the SCrew. So if it's a matter of saving $$ then go for the SuperDuty. You would then have more truck than you need but if you ever wanted to upgrade that trailer or pull something heavyer, then you would have no problems. Go to the Ford dealer and do some "extensive" test driving of both trucks. As far as milage goes, Personally I feel it's "nice" to get great milage BUT you gotta remember that these are full size working trucks (SCrew & SuperDuty). So a few mpg difference between the two is just something you get used to. And besides, with a price difference of $4000 ($28k SCrew vs $24k V10) you can buy a whole lot of gas for that V10

2k F250 CC SWB 6 speed 4x2 Diesel XLT Super Duty, Woodland Green
Power Mirrors, 3.73 LS, Captains Chairs, ARE tonneau top, rear privacy glass

265/75/16 AS OWL tires, am/fm/cassette/cd, rechargable MagLite
Clarion APA 5240 amp, Memphis speakers:Components front, 5x7 rear, 10"sub
SuperChip, Stepshields, Ventshields on windows, rubber bed mat
rugged liner bedliner on tailgate, quick disconnect jumper cables
unaFORDable (decal on tailgate) Western Diesel Turbo Brake (whoa boy)
Finally gauges!!: Pyrometer & Boost on the A-Pillar mount

The choice is yours to make but if you can get a 250 with a V10 cheaper than a 150 supercrew with V8 I would say save the money and get the 250 plus if you need to tow more wieght you have the power to do it with that V10.

Well, I spent half of the day test driving F150's only.
Reg cab, supercab, and of course, Crewcab.(Supercrew)

My biggest personal concern is that the 5 Spd is not available with the 5.4, and of course there is no way-no how Ford is going to mate the two.
I prefer a stick, always have, been driving them for 16 years now and I never tire of it.

I like the way the Crewcab feels, it is large enough inside and with the 5.4 it will haul more than enough, But it starts at around $28K.

A few of the dealers I was at today had some of the 5 spd F250's with the V-10. They were base model XL's but I should be able to get a feel for them when I am test driving them tomorrow.

I did see a powerstroke with the 6 spd in it... now only if Ford would mate the 6 spd with the V-10...Hmmm......

Oh well, I will see tomorrow.

B777,

See my sig for what I bought. I paid $26,676, excluding taxes and registration, $500 over invoice, on an ordered vehicle.

The "standard" features of a Screw are more that what an F250 is, and if memory serves me correctly a comparable equiped F250 S/C or Crew Cab was more than the F150 Screw. Go to www.ford.com and price the Screw and the comparable equiped F250 and see which one costs less. The go find out what the invoice price is on the two vehicles and buy the one you want.

So I am going to the local Kwikie Mart to get some smokes and as I am coming out a guy pulls up in a Reg cab F250 with a V-10 and a 5 spd.

The thing sounds like a race truck!!

I ask him about it and he tells me and shows me the exhaust sytem, it is made by a company called "Banks" (sp?) It is headers all the way back to the single 4" exit.
He has a superchip and a Airaid type setup, except it is made by a company called "Tripower".
The guy takes me for a ride in this thing and I know if a stock Lightning would have been there to race, this thing would have ate it alive!!

I was absolutely blown away by how much power and torque this thing had.
Smoked every gear except 5th.

I honestly did not know a truck(Other than the L) could be like that!
It had a 2-3 lowering job done to it, it has 18" wheels and it looked very nice.

Something else to think about, Eh?

The Banks Powerpack includes headers, exhaust, intake tube, air filter & housing. I don't know about the Tripower name, though. Banks also sells an Ottomind "performance" chip as well as transmission shift modifiers (for automatics). The Ottomind isn't as aggressive as a Superchip, but also doesn't require premium fuel.

Come on now b777 that F-250 with v-10 will smoke stock lighnting. The lighnting weighs like 2000 pounds less than F-250. The stock lightning would kill that F-250 try to be more realistic when making a statement

2001 F-150 5.4L trition,

XLT with Black Clearcoat
4x4 3.55 limited slip
factory cab steps

recieved: 2/22

Current Mods: Ford Plastic bedliner, Bug Deflector II

DH, the F-250 Reg cab with a V-10 and 5 spd weighs right at 5,000 Lbs.

The Lightning weighs 4200.
I only see a 800 Lb difference there.....

STOCK the V-10 has 310 HP and 425 Ft Lb of torque. I am not sure what the Banks system and superchip did for it but I would guess about 60-~80 HP and 40~60 Ft Lb of torque.

Maybe I was a little over excited to say the F250 would eat the L but I guarantee that truck would make many a stock L owner very worried.

Please check yur figures before claiming others to be "Unrealistic".

I've never heard of a company called Tripower, but I believe theres a chip out there for the diesel called the tripower. I believe Western Diesel makes it. I would believe that the reg cab 2wd v10 5 speed, with the banks kit, a good intake, and a chip would put up a damn good fight against a lighting. If the guy can shift, then it'd be too close to call. But the torque the V10 puts out stock, that plus mods should give the lightning a run for the money.

I saw a guy at the track this past summer running a f-250 diesel with the banks system and he ran 15.7. That was in a crew cab truck with a short bed (huge truck). Does anyone know what the banks systems costs for the diesel??? I suggest if you get a 250 get the diesel. I'm getting one tomorrow

a lowered superduty with 18" wheels you say? that just aint right.

B777 -
are you looking for a 4x4, or 2x4? If it was a 4x4 I would get a superduty just for the live front axle. How about a diesel while your at it, tons of power stock, and you can bomb disels to make ungodly amounts of tourqe and hp for way less than any gasser. Not to mention the great gas mileage, and the fact that the diesel engine will probably outlast the truck.
