I am concidering putting my F350 on Ebay. Thinkin about getting the new 150. You guys think that would pull my 24ft enclosed race trailer ok? Will I need air bags for the bigger load?

That's a nice truck! I dunno if I would trade the pulling power of a SuperDuty for a gasser, though.

You have an awesome 1 ton diesel and a 24 ft enclosed trailer that I'm sure weighs around 5000lbs empty....are you serious?

Now the new F-150 is capable of towing it, but with that much weight, you'll kill your gas mileage and you'll not have anywhere near the power that you had with the diesel.

'04 F150 vs. SD

You can get the HD package on the new F150 (only on long bed), and it is rated (w/tow package) to pull 9800lbs.

I also have a 24' race car trailer (Pace) It weighs about 10K lbs. when fully loaded. I am more comfortable towing with a Super Duty.

Both are rated about the same for towing, but when you look at the hubs, brakes, diff, axles, spindles, springs, frame, etc. you will find all are bigger on the SD.

With current rebates the gas SD is only a little more than the F150.

I know it sounds crazy, but let me explain better. I do not pull my trailer much. When I do, it isn't all that far. I just really like the new 150's. I'm very aware that the Diesel will pull better! Thanks for your responces.

If you don't tow that much, then go for a new FX4 F-150!

No.

The big 3-1/2 (Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Toyota) are in a "pulling" war. What they are rated to pull and what they will actually pull well are 2 different things. The 150's and SD's are 2 different animals, despite what the "ratings" tell you.

Don't sell the monster, or if you do, maybe move "down" to a 250 with the diesel. Half tone are great sport trucks and all, but they won't do the tow thing as well. It isn't all engine power, the HD F150 package give sgreat towing power for a 1/2 ton. But that doesn't mean it will tow as well as a 3/4 or 1 ton with the same weight. The SuperDuties will just flat out be more stable with the same load. Looks like you've got a great truck there, I wouldn't get rid of it. The F150s may be the new design, but the with the SDs, you're sitting way up there, like ya own the road.

Agreed, but I don't even consider the Toyota a vaiable alternative if you need a tow or work truck. You can use it to pick up the wife some geraniums.

I'll trade you my truck for your SD. It's a nice Lariat! Anyway, though, these trucks are fully capable of towing what they are rated to tow, that's why they have different ratings. Sure, maybe someone would feel safer towing 9,900 pounds in a 3/4 or 1 ton than towing 9,900 pounds in a half ton, but the half ton is capable.

lol. Well thats why I only gave Toyota a 1/2. By the way, they are coming out with some big monster of a truck (for a Toyota that is). It is bigger than 2 of the 3 Detroit made trucks. They are talking it all up, I think it holds twice as many geraniums. I saw a reveiw on it, basically summing it up as cumbersome, underpowered and good up to 2 gallon shrubs and large hanging baskets.

I don't think manufacturers outside of Detroit truly understand American's, or a real truck, despite their vain attempts.

Pickup man,

You are right, they might ~feel~ safer pulling 9,900lbs in a 3/4 or 1ton truck as compared to a half ton. But they will also *BE* safer.

Agreed, they will be safer, but that doesn't mean the 1/2 ton is not capable.

I went in the opposite direction. Even though I loved my 2003 SuperCrew FX4 w/ 5.4 L I made the decision to move up to a Super Duty with the 6.0L diesel. I tow a 24 ft. Terry Lite that has a GVWR of around 5200 lbs. and by the time I loaded my truck with the wife, kids and trailer for a camping trip the truck worked very hard to get us to our destination. Gas mileage totally sucked and those 6% grades are murder. On one occassion I had stopped at a stop light in a town in NM, air temp was over 90 degrees and I was stopped on a grade. The truck just barely took off when the light turned green. Scared the C$#p out of me.

I felt that while the 5.4L was not a bad engine the weak link in the drivetrain was the transmission. A lot of times while topping a hill the tranny would refuse to shift into a higher gear for what seemed like a long time, and this was even if I let off of the gas completely and then stepped on it again and then let off again.

Then there were mysterious clunks that would occassionally come from the transmission. Sometimes they happened at low speeds and sometimes at high speeds.

You have a very nice Super Duty and if I were you I would consider keeping it and also getting you an F-150.

I know if I could have afforded it I would have kept the Supercrew and still bought the Super Duty 6.0L.

By the way the SD 6.0 is an awesome truck!!
