No that isn't unusual, if you are driving 85 everywhere you go.

Anyone have any ideas as to what could cause the poor mileage on my Expy? 9 and 10 in city and 13 is my best on the hwy.

Yeah, I do cruise at 70, but that is turning less than 2k on the tach.

4.6l, 3.55 gears using the 87 oct program and a Magnaflow catback....

Figured that I could 16 or better on the Hwy or interstate.

I get about the same. 9.2 in town and highway about 14.2.

I also noticed that if your going up grade most of the way it'll eat you *** in gas. Also, I noticed that if you reset you gas MPG ave deal up top where the digi compass is you'll notice that if you let of the gas at 70mph, and coast and reset it, it'll get up to 46mpg for gap until you start slowing down. So what I do is when I am going down a hill let off and let it coast for a bit then get back on it when you start to go slow. Or if you are going down a grade like on the freeway and the grade starts to become a hill I'll gas it faster down the hill (less effort on the car) and then coast up the hill as far as I can before gassing it again.

I noticed this will give me higher numbers if I continue it. Also drive like there is an egg taped to the pedal. Push the pedal lightly and go that way. No car taking off at a light bull*****....

Try it with your gauge and see how high it gets. I have seen 50mpg when you let off the gas at like 80mph and hit the reset/....

Depends on whether the winds coming at me from the front end or the **** end on the highway. 9-11 in town and 13-19 on the highway. It seems like if I can keep it turning under 2000rpm on the highway, it does much better. I have the 3.73's so that's right at 70mph or so maybe a bit slower. The slower you go the better it will be since an expy has the aerodynamics of a brick.

I really didn't buy it with gas mileage in mind. If I had, I prolly would have commited suicide a couple years back out of sheer remorse...

I notice that you have a 4.6 that could be the main cuase for your low milage. Yes smaller engine but more strain than for a 5.4 so for the 5.4 its easy and so better effincency.

To be honest, I wasnt buying into the idea of driving like there was an egg strapped to the pedal. I used to have a Suburban with a 350 and it got much better mileage no matter how I drove it.

So, yesterday I climbed through the mountains about 60 miles one way to tow a 63 Ford Failane 500 home for a project car. I filled up on the way out of town and stopped at the same place to fill up again when I returned. Average mileage round trip was 14.25 mpg. I was shocked, really shocked.

After getting gas last night and stopping at the car wash on the way home to blast 21 years of just sitting there off of the project car and going to church this morning I have 14 miles on the car and lost 1/8 tank just looking at the gauge.

What have I learned? I dont know. Taking more time to accelerate seemed to help on the long trip, but not too sure what has happened since then.

I know the whole power to weight ratio is not in my favor with this little motor and heavy truck. Just thinking there ought to be a way to get middle of the road mileage with this thing.
