Noise in undercarriage
Noise in undercarriage
Have thumping and knocking noise in area of center/rear of 1999 Expedition 2WD at bumps and slight irregularities in road. Sounds like broken shock or loose tie rod but can't find anything when ti's up on lift. Exhaust is tight as are all cross members and other objects around frame and gas tank. Anyone have any ideas or similar problem?
I have a 99 as well and i have the same clunk. I cannot find anything that would cause it other than the exhuast. But my exhuast is tight as well. I have over 100k hard miles on mine now and have no problems. But if you find the noise let me know.
Johnny A: We have different opinions as to where the "clunk" is, some think it's in the doors, I tend to localize it under the rear seats. Cannot find anything loose up on the lift, but have a hunch it's loose when the truck is settled on the springs and maybe a loose shock is pushed up through the top bolt mount. Would help to get under the thing, eh? Maybe a bushing in either the traction bar or sway bar is gone.

i have the same sounds in my 01.
on a mildy bumpy or rough road, it sounds like there is something seriously loose under the truck.
i think its front suspension related, however it sounds like it is coming from directly under the drivers or just behind the drivers seat.
its most noticeable when slowing down or accelerating on a bad street.

G. Andrews: I've sat in the back seats and it sounds to me like it's under them...my grandson thinks it's the back window; wife thinks it's in the doors and the mechanic in our little small town shop can't hear it at all. Guess I should train myself to not hear it as well. When it falls off, we'll know what it was!

Dang y'all for bringing this up.
I'm noticing that when the temps are below say, 40 degrees or so, mine's doing it too. I haven't checked the shock bolt again but that certainly is the same sound I was getting before tightening it, just a lot worse then.
A questions, does everyone that's noticing this have rear LLS? 2 WD? Wondering if it's a chacteristic of the bags when cold.
