Noise in undercarriage
We have 2WD, no air ride control. Just the straignt stuff. Happens in all temps and speeds, too. Bump dependant, so I know it's something loose, just can't find it.

I had a clunk other than the one I mentioned earlier today. The other one was in the front. Figured it was the sway bar with a worn out bushing. Low and behold it was a brake pad. The breaks were worn (40K miles) and as such I had them replaced on Friday. To lazy to do it myself. As such the clunk is gone. My point is that this also could apply to the rear pads on a higher mileage Expy. The easiest way would be to pull of a wheel and check. Good luck.
My EB is a 99, 4X4 w/ LLS.
I'ts been below 40F ever since I purchased the vehicle. I di notice that sometimes the rear "drops" with a thump sound when I first get in the car in the moring before starting.
Sure seems like the rear air bags are the problem. I'll have to check on that upper bolt this weekend.
Sure seems like this is an annoying problem for most of us!
OT-Anyone know why my signature doesn't appear even thought I have it set to display?

I just posted a thread on this
I found the clunk to be side to side play in the rear axles.I checked tightness on everything in the rear of my 98 exp. and couldn't find anything loose or broken.I pulled the wheels off and pulled my axles in and out and behold a clunking noise. My wife even verified the noise with me.The axles moved 3/8 of an inch in and out and up and down.My question is, do the c-clips go bad or wear out and if so whenwill they fail and my axle goes flying out down the road and my wife gets in a bad reck. Will be ford be at blame for this??Is there any recalls or TSBs out for this???This is worrying me.I have been looking for this noise for months. It only has 50K on it.My t-bird has 150K on it and the rearend doesn't make any noise and its a 8.8 like the exp..The other noise I found was a bad bushing or two in the front control arms.I love ford but this is rediculus.Bushings should last more than 50k.I have an old muscle car that the bushings are still good and they are 37 years old.

Have been away for a while working on some projects, but thought I would reply to FamilyRides question.
2WD non LLS.
Still having the noise.
Had a tech ride in it today with me...he said "hmmmm, havent heard that one before"
I am still under 20k miles, so its not a high mileage issue and my rear axle doesnt have the play in it mentioned in one of the other posts.
just want to get rid of the noise.

Wow, thats weird, is anyone beginning to think these things arent as great as we thought ? My Ex makes the same sound belive it or not, how strange !?!? It is so loud when I hit either alot of small bumps or one or more big ones. But mine is lowered, so I thought it could be shocks or mounts, but I am begining to think it could be control arm bushings, I have a friend who had bushings go bad on his BMW 330ci @ 43K miles and it was making a clunking sound, but mine sounds more like big things hitting eachother. Other than that my door squeaks and the car feels like **** over bumps.
how can we forward this link to ford tech ? although I seriously doubt they will lift a finger to help us....... the last time ford tried to help me, they ripped the door of my X and got my 1200 watch and book of 175 CD's ripped off from the body shop they sent it to, without my permission of course.... THANKS FORD MOTOR COMPANY !!!!!! I'm buying a chevy next.
I have the same problem with my '97. It's not a loud thunk but I can definitely hear it. I'm going to replace my shocks as soon as I get my tax return back. I'll check the sway bar while I'm under there and the bushings also to see if that may be the source of the noise. I need to check the the brake pads too as was mentioned earlier in this post.
We'll I just had my head gasket replaced (1999 5.4 w/48Kmiles) under warranty. The engine has an idle vibration in the gas pedal (even before the gasket replacement). The rear had that clunking noise over bumps.
Looked at all the TSB's and have not had the clunk and vibration solved.
So, do I like the truck? Well it seems fine on the highway and towing (reason for the purchase), but not happy with these issues. These things shouldn't be an issue on late 90's trucks. Why can't Ford get it right, along with other manufactures.
I used my brothers Durango several times for towing (318 motor) and it did the job. I just thought the larger Expedition would do better, and it does at the expense of a low speed vibration and noise. It makes the Durango feel like a sports car in ride quality and handling.
Still waiting for a coil pack failure, spark plug blowout, ect.
So glad I bought used, and someone else took the 50% depreciation on this vehicle.

No regerets having bought our '99 Expy...first lease we ever bought out. After having driven Chevy and Ford trucks for work for the past 30 years, there's no comparison on the quality and comfort issues. My '94 Ford pickup was designed better and held up better than our then new '98 GMC pickup. Ford just designs 'em better. I'll put up with a few noises 'till I can fix them before I'll go get into a Chevy or Dodge.
My '01 Lariat is 75K and problem free. I don't even feel the need to knock on wood after saying that!
Happy Trails!
