Exhaust Longevity
Exhaust Longevity
Question: Does anyone know what I can use on my Aluminized cat back for extended life.
Such as what primer and paint, any tips would be great.
Up here in NY they like to dump the salt heavy.

I've done this to my Ranger pickup. Just get some black engine paint and spray it with about 3 or 4 thin coats. Then let it dry about a day. It will smell after you drive it at first. Then the smell goes away.
I did'nt primer it. That would cause the primer to melt because it can't resist the high temperatures of the exhaust itself. Just get some fine sandpaper, and sand away any rust or dirt that may be on the exhaust. Then, use some high temperature black engine enamel paint(you can get it at any parts store), and spray it down starting with a very light coat. Then spray about two or three more coats on it. Be sure to let it dry betwwen each coat. This will stop the rust from eating through from the outside, but you cannot stop it from eating through from the inside of the pipe. As the condensation builds up on the inside of the pipe, it will eat through from the inside out. I would'nt worry about it. A good aluminized exhaust ought to last you 5 or 6 years. 7 at the most.
