Wall thickness

Hey all,

Let me start by saying I am a fairly newer owner of an 04 5.4l FX4. I'm looking at putting a custom dual exhaust system (rear cats taken off and a pair of Dynomax Bullets) on it. I work in a metal shop and we use a lot of 304 stainless steel tubing. I've been able to pick up some scrap/used pieces to put together a system. Now with that being said, the wall thickness is .065. One of the fellow welders said he did this to one of his trucks not too long ago and due to the thicker wall, it sounded like a "boat motor". I'm just curious if the thicker wall had anything to do with this? Or did he just do something wrong with his setup?

Nope, the thicker the better, -as long as they fit. I'm sure you know how to design them.

The more heat you can transfer downstream and out, the better.

The more heat you can keep out of the engine compartment, the better.

The thicker they are (standard is 16 gauge), the less sound resonation thru the header itself and the deeper sound you get from the back.

You'll have a stronger system with the appropriate hangers.

The "boat motor" effect stems from the set-up after the headers.

If you have the opportunity, I say do it. That's a lot of bends and tig work, -cool project tho, -good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I'm kinda new to exhaust but I have a guy at my shop who will help me out with the x pipe and what not. He's done it quite a few times before. Lucking pretty much all we do in out shop is run SS piping so we have all the fittings as well. So no bending for me! Just a lot of cutting elbows for all the right angles. I might turn this into a mini project thread..

Nice project for sure. I have a smaller one in mind, using Kook's LT headers, but all I have to do is turn a couple primary's. Nothing like what your planning.

I did that same thing except i used .083 wall 316 ss pipe. It turned out great. Check out my thread "diy true duals" in the 04-08 f-series truck section. I was able to make mufflers, x-pipe and all right in our fab shop.
