Intake Questions/Help

I have an 05 King Ranch I bought 2 yers ago with 46K on it, now it that has 66K miles on it. Thinking about installing a Cold Air intake intake on it to get a little better mileage and power, with mileage being the main goal.
I have a few concerns though. First, I live on a dirt road and it's pretty dusty,.....should I be concerned with the dust levels with a modified intake? Also if I do change the intake is it really worth the cost? Will it help that much with mileage? I've read it does and I've read that it doesn't. I don't do a whole lot of tough driving, tow nothing more than 3K lbs and haul loam and mulch, but that's about it.

I'm also a little leary of messing wth the truck since it's 7 years old and so far I've had zero issues with it except for needing new calipers and rotors on the front and having the parking break freeze up on me, which I know is common.

Suggestions on doing it or not and the type of intake to get would be reat.

Thanks!

In my opinion, it is not worth the cost. All it will do is draw in warmer air if not enclosed, shell your wallet out about $200, and dress up the engine bay mildly. The Gotts/DWV intake modification is all these trucks need. Fix the OEM restriction in the fender tube, and a Amsoil filter. Results are cold air, more flow, just a few bucks in supplies, and an un-altered appearance.

Agreed! If you enjoy the quiet intake growl of the stock air box, leave it alone.

The CIAs are typically very noisy while under throttle.

Just drop in a better flowing aftermarket filter and perhaps the mentioned Gotts mod and be done.

Is it worth it is a hard question to answer.

Would you spend $300 or $400 on replacing the factory stereo or more then that replacing the factory wheels ?
- Myself, I cannot appreciate anything more than the factory stereo, works fine for me, so I would not spend that kind of money replacing a stereo that works. I would not replace the factory wheels, spending that kind of money to replace something that looks good and works fine is a waste of money to me. These are opinions, not facts. This is why it is hard to say is it worth it with an objective view point.

Modifications to increase MPG are a double edge sword.
mods to yield more TQ or HP can increase it, but are you going to drive it the same 100% of the time to see the results ?
- Or more so, are you going to use that extra HP and TQ and actually drive MPG down ?

You can do a simple intake modification & filter change to increase the lb/min ~ 6% ( not linear over the whole range ) and a filter swap.
- Is this going to bump MPG enough to notice the change ??

If you are after MPG gains, the best route is proper maintenance.
You should be on your 2nd fuel filter by now, and in within 14K miles looking at plugs and O2 sensors ( and your 3rd fuel filter ) and if the road is that bad, replacing the filter quite often.

If you do go with an intake, open element or closed does not matter.
If you are driving over 35 MPG the engine compartment temp is the same as the outside ambient air temp.
If you do go this route, make sure that the intake does not need a tune to adjust for out of range on the flow rate table. If it does, you would need to spend another $ 400 + on a tuner to adjust for it.
Also look at an intake that has a filter wrap if you have that bad of an environment.

That is where mine goes between the exhaust sounding so much better and the roar of the V8 with CAI the mpg is 15 or worse when driving around town. But open highway still sounds great and get 17.5 which drops when I get to my destination lol.

Thanks!

Thanks all for the imput.

I may try to the GOTTS mod.

I am on my second fuel filter...I was getting 15/19 before I changed it 10K ago and now I'm at 13/17. Was lucky before and now where everyone else is, which is why I was looking for a way to milk out everything I could. In all reality it doesn't bother me with what I'm getting, I'm just looking for something that'll get me a little more mpgs and maybe sound good without messing up a good thing.

I would suggest the Gotts Spectre Version super clean looking and very easy to complete no cutting, sanding, or painting. I did mine last week and I have an amsoil air filter otw as we speak.

Here is a link to the thread: https://www.f150online.com/forums/ar...4l-engine.html read the first post to get an idea of what you are doing then skip to post #74 Installation instructions and Part #'s are listed.

Super Easy and took me about 15 mins to complete.

Here is my installed pic:
