Did the DWV
Did the DWV
I went ahead and did the Gotts/DWV mod, and I am impressed to say the least. I'm baffled though, to know that it took some regular guys, truck owners, not vehicle engineers, to figure out something is amiss by having a dinky little 2" snorkle in the fender when it can very easily and safely be a larger 3" pipe! I did the JackandJanet method:

and I really like that it is simply the 1 piece of 3" pipe and a 3.5" worm clamp. It takes a little patience to fab it, of which I have none. So I went ahead and used a grinder on the pipe till it was close to a 3.25" x 3.5" oval and finished smoothing with a palm sander. I also ended up using white PVC (no black ABS to be found) so I went over the whole surface to "scuff it up" for future paint adherence. I didn't have a Dremel to open up the fender hole a bit, so a recip. saw and good metal blade proved useful. After, I hit the metal with a 1/2 round bastard file to smooth things out. When I go back to paint the tube, I will hit the cut/filed surfaces with some paint to prevent any possibility of rusting. With all the different ways to make this mod, I think I like the idea behind this one the best, as there is minimal parts, and it is one smooth tube, as opposed to any additional baffles or ridges, as with the Spectre flexible intake tube version, or the pipe/coupling/downspout connector version, though both are also nice and clean looking.
What I noticed most right away was the minimized lag on throttle. One of my first posts when I joined here was asking if my truck was defective because of the hesitation on acceleration, only to find out it was just "the way it is" with our trucks. This simple mod (though not completely eliminating it) greatly reduced the lag I was feeling. I also notice there is much less of a "stall" when coming back down from higher RPMs; the responses overall seem significantly quicker. I wish I did this mod years ago! A late Kudos to everyone and all versions of this simple, cheap, but from what I can tell, quite effective mod!
