Question 2001 4.6 stock Y...improved?

I finally got a chance to crawl under my new truck this weekend (built 5-01). The stock "Y" looks much better than the one I had on my '97. Has anyone pulled their Y off of a 2001? Does it only look improved from the outside or is it actually a better flow path than the old one?
Oh, one other thing...what is that black can thing on the muffler hanger???? Some sort of harmonic thing or what??

it`s junk

RockOFFROAD

The stock y pipe on the 2001 is junk, it may look good on the outside but once you see the inside you will understand. The hole cut into the right side pipe is only about 1.75 inches with the left side reduced from 2.50 to 2.25 inches and then welded over the 1.75 opening on the right side pipe once you change it you will gain more power and gas mileage. Check my signature below for the modifications done to my truck, they have made a big difference in power and gas mileage.

I hope this helps.

Larry.

All that can thing does is help to stop any vibrations comming from the exhaust, i had it removed when my 40 series flowmaster was installed.

Hope this helps.

Speeder,
Thanks for the info. I didn't want to cut out that Y and wish I hadn't!!
Any changes in vibration after removing the mysterious black can? Was this to correct the infamous 60-63mph vibration we all seemed to have with the older trucks?
Just curious..what sort of mileage gains have you seen with your mods? 4.6 or 5.4?

I have a 4.6 and i average 18-20 mpg with all the modifications that i have done so far. as far as vibration after removing that can, none that i can feel. But i do have a bad vibration at 90 mph though, it seems that the drive shaft ford used in the 01 supercabs is a bit to short and at a certain speed it starts to vibrate real bad. There is TSB on this so it will be fixed under warranty. So it will be going to the dealer very soon. The next thing im going to get is a superchip.

Wink

Speeder,
18-20 huh? That's great. I have thought of the FIPK at a minimum.
I just saw a thread on the drive shaft TSB, what a bummer. I have a Ext Cab 4x..I imagine that only makes it worse. I haven't experienced it yet. I also haven't had it above 75 mph yet. If I hit a moose at that speed....ouch!

Angry vibration

RockOFFROAD

Im just glad it`s under warranty, im sure it would be expensive to repair otherwise.

Unhappy TSB

Hi Jackal

I found out about the TSB from Palerider, He posted in the transmission section. The TSB #01-9-1, It`s for 4x2 models equipped with a 4R70w automatic transmission and 139 inch wheelbase only - built before 3/1/2001. On the supercab models it seems that ford used a driveshaft that is a little to short. So at 90 mph you get a bad vibration. Ford will replace the driveshaft and the extinsion housing on all trucks with this problem. The bad part is Ford wants the dealer to reprogram the PCM to reduce the maximum top speed of the vihicle to reduce the possibility of vibration. I talked to the shop foreman and he isn`t going to reprogram the PCM in my truck. (my truck was built 9/25/2000).
