Drone Issue...

I had an exhaust installed by a local shop and I asked them for an 18" oval body Magnaflow SI/DO. They did a great job with the exhaust but they installed a 14" oval body Magnaflow. It sounds mean and I don’t mind the deep rumble but it drones real bad at 2,000 rpms which is right at 70-75mph in my truck. So my question is, will having them put the 18" body cut down on the drone? I assume they will do this free of charge since it is what I asked for to begin with. I will try to post some pics of the tip exits to see if that has anything to do with the drone. It's very similar to KR-TEXAS exhaust, except not true duals. Thanks for the help.

Where does it exit? If its dumping before the rear axle, or going out the side lightning style, there'll be more of a drone.. Your best bet is 45'd or straight out the back to avoid droning. If that doesn't do the trick, then I would say yes, a larger muffler will cut down on drone.

I just put a pic in my gallery. I wanted it to be hidden a little more than it is but it's growing on me. It's not pointing straight down and it clears the bumper by a couple inches, so I don’t think the drone is coming from the exits. Also I made sure they welded the muffler as far back as possible. Thanks for the quick reply ~$t3v3-o~.

Call summit racing and buy a Car Chemistry 2 disc insert for the diameter if your exhaust right before the muffler and have them install it there. I run just 1-3disk in my camaro, no muffs or cats and I have barely any drone on the freeway. They are cheap and work wonders.

(Car Chemistry 2 disc insert) That seems like a good idea. I read a lot of reviews and it seems like it works. How restrictive are these? I know it's still would be better than stock, but I'd like to keep as much flow as possible. If I could keep the rumble and get rid of that 2,000 RPM drone it would be perfect. Thanks

Honestly, it really does not affect flow, when I went from straight pipe to the insert on my camaro, it gained HP on the dyno. It's just enough to tone it down but not really affect flow due to it's design and if place in the correct direction, it actually helps scavenge exhaust gas.

You guys have it all wrong. I just put this new DEI system into my cousins '86 Camaro the other day. We easily picked up like 500hp. It goes so fast now his mullet whips out of his t-tops. Here is a schematic that we used for the welding shop:

It should only cost a couple hundred but it's worth it.

have them put the 18" muffler in. It will be quieter.

So this "DEI" you speak of. What kind of gains can I expect? And will it void my warranty? Seems like a pretty smart idea and I’m sure the EPA would love it, no emissions! How did you find out about it? Did they give you free headlight bulbs when you bought it....?

I talked to the guys at the shop and they’re going to weld the 18" Magnaflow on Saturday. I’m also going to ask them about the DEI.

You definetly should! Tons of added hp, and leaves all those supercharger kits in the dust!

Looks to be for carb engines only

Damn.... There goes an extra 500+ HP. Maybe I'll just get a K&N and gain a couple hundred that way.
