Exhaust fluid for new diesels.

Exhaust fluid for new diesels.
I did a search but couldn't find the answers to my questions so basically i was just wondering what is it and how does it work? All i know is it's just a tank you fill up to help with emissions.
Questions:
#1. Is it necessary maintence or not?
#2. Can dealerships fill the tank up?
#3. It is something i could buy in wal-mart and do myself right?
#4. Would the truck run fine without it?

On a side note you can pick it up for $13.99 for a 21/2-gallon jug. I think auto zone has it. Never seen it at wal-mart.
Oh and just to poke some fun. The Duramax uses more than the Powerstroke too.

I talked to my dealer about the system on the 6.7L when I had my 6.4L down there getting the oil changed and he said that the truck will start throwing up error messages letting you know it's about to run empty. He couldn't remember how many miles it would go before running out, but from what I've read and heard is that it will run at least 1,000 miles before it runs out. I don't know how much truth is behind that though since I havent jumped on a 6.7L yet.

DEF or Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a Ammonia based fluid (Urea and Water mix) that is injected directly into the exhaust stream after the DPF and Cat. The ammonia in the urea reacts with the NOx emissions to help reduce them among other things. You are going to see this system become really popular because it is extremely effective at reducing emissions in diesel exhaust. If it runs empty, the engine ECU will limit operation by limiting speed, limiting power, or not letting you restart it.
The EPA has mandated that all diesels 3.0L and above to conform to Tier II emissions. Some manufactures are choosing to go with DEF injection and others are using an advanced EGR system.

It will let you know via the message screen well before you will run out.... And it's simple to add. The jugs come with built in nozzles that allow you to dump it in with no mess. When you ignore the low warning and really get low, the truck will go into limp mode and you will be stuck driving under 45 mph.

We have a new 2011 ford 6.7 work truck so let me fill you in.. As stated previously, it is a urea chemical injected directly into the exhaust to reduce emissions. We just rolled over 3,000 miles and still running strong- From what the dealer told me it will go between 5000-7000 miles before running out. A warning light comes on and you have to fill it back up. And yes, I love it- here's why- When the truck is running you can stand right next to the exhaust and not hardly smell ANY diesel fumes. That's nice when we start it in our shop and pull it out it doesn't fume us out with the black smoke etc.. I think it's a good thing..
