I Aplogize For This Thread In Advanced(cats/exhaust Questions)

Once again I apologize x10000 for making this thread. I know this has been beaten to a pulp millions of times.

I just have a couple questions on my future exhaust setup. I have been searching and searching, but haven't found any of my answers directly.

Any who here I go, as you can see I live in CA and have to abide by strict CA SMOG laws. I want to re do my exhaust cause I am simply not happy with it. I want to run true duals so here is what I got.

Here's what I'm thinking, I'm gonna start from my headers down to the muffler please I'm open to comments.

1. CARB legal Pacesetter "Shorty" headers
2. Magnaflow "Hi Flow" Cats P/N 94106
3. 2.5" piping through the whole system
4. X-pipe for my cross over
5. Dual Magnaflow Magnapack mufflers.
6. Undecided on tips and exit.

So my two questions:

1. I know the Hi Flow cats are illegal in CA. I'm gonna cut out my section of my stock cats and save them. When it comes time to smog I will take out my hi flows and put my stockers back in. I have family outside of CA who I can pay to have the cats shipped there and then they can ship them to me in CA. Good idea or not?

2. Is the Magnaflow Magnapack the loudest Magnaflow muffler?

Thanks for reading. I know it's long, and I apologize once again.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hey bud.

No need for the disclaimer - I consider exhausts as very subjective and hence the next best thing to exempt as far as repetitive posts are concerned ( imho)

So with that said - my humble 2 Canuck Bucks:

- shorties - save yer money - no gains (unless you like the looks, bragging rights, etc). Consider longtubes?
- 2.25" pipe would give you a bit better bottom-end, with little sacrifice on top given yer 2V motor.
- swapping cats is gonna get old over time; consider leaving the stockers in for now - see how you like it.
- Magnapacks are one of the loudest. Consider Borla? (see Senor Frog)

Otherwise sounds like a plan. Strive for Stainless mandrel-bent tubing.

Good luck

In my opinion...

Leave the stock manifolds and cats alone. The shorties are a waste of money, as they produce no extra power at all. They may sound a "little" better than stock manifolds, but it is not near worth the time or money. Seeing how you live in CA, I would just try the dual magnapacks with an X for now. I think you will like the sound, and if it's not enough, then you can figure out something to do with the cats (but I don't recommend it in CA).

Thanks for the replies guys.

As for the shorties I already have them sitting in my garage. Got them for real cheap so I said what the hell.

I can't do long tubes cause they're illegal in CA.

If I re-do my full exhaust for true duals I have to rip out everything as I'm running a 3" SISO right now.

So I may as well put hi flows since everything will be out.

I'm still young so changing out the cats wont be a big deal for me. Its every few years I have to do it once.

MGD:
if I go 2.25 how would I go doing that since the Maggie Hi Flow Cats come in 2.5"

^ You would have the shop neck down behind the cats to 2.25.

If your already going to be illegal with hi-flow cats, why spend the money? Why not just run with out cats?

Also for the x-pipe I want 2.25" in/out right?

I'm probably just gonna buy a Magnaflow X-pipe since I know it'll be from a respectable company.

Hi.

You can do as Sir Fog suggests, or you can indeed get 2.25" hi-flows: http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...atalogno=94305

2.25" IN/OUT X pipe... yes

Neck down } A shop will take a piece of 2.25" and swell it out so that it fits on the inside of the 2.5" behind the cats. Now they can weld it solid and you have 2.25" duals for MAX low torque.

Very good choice on the mufflers, but I would do as avfrog suggested as far as leaving the stock cats in for now. I thought I read somewhere that they won't pass true duals on a vehicle that didn't come with them stock, but that might just be for the **** shops.

I know my Smog technician personally and he told me as long as you have stock cats I will pass you.

just from personal experience, I had the cats off my truck for the last 2 months and I absolutely hated the sound. Last night I finally got around to putting on a pair of magnaflow hi flow cats and I really like the way it turned out. I guess it's all preference but my buddies thought it sounded like crap without cats too.

Cause I don't want to deal with the o2 sensors and having the truck throw codes. Plus I've read a few times that engines now a days are meant to run with cats. Plus if I did get pulled over while having my hi flows in they would see that I have cats and be good to go. If I ran straight pipes I'd be up a creek.

So I'm just gonna get my sections of cats clamped in so I can interchange between stock and hi flow when it comes time to smog
