Question Considering a Roush CAI, need a programmer first?

Hey y'all, I'm likely getting a CAI for my 2007 5.4L, and I had a couple questions.

I've heard that they run lean even without a CAI, what do I need to correct the ratio?

I was planning on an Evo Edge, can this be set to adjust for a CAI to fix my lean issue?

I know the Roush is kinda pricey, but that doesn't concern me if it's a good product so let's not bring that up.

^Custom tuning. Gryphon or SCT.

Mgd that was the best response to a post ive ever seen. Ok ive heard good things about gryphon. Can their custom tunes handle a supercharger when i eventually get one? Ill check out their programmers and probably come back with a couple questions

The supported tuners and their related custom flash programmers can handle any mods you'd care to consider - including boost.

Best to consult with Bill @ PHP, who can tune via the Gryphon or SCT hardware, Justin @ VMP for SCT, or Mike Troyer @ Troyer Performance for SCT. See siggy.

Good luck.

gryphon looks pretty cool, i think i'll go with one of those. the cs and cts ones are pretty badass but i'll probably just get regular one.

I believe that most Roush CAI's are made by Airaid. Just a thought...

I bought a Roush CAI a couple of months ago along with an Edge Evolution...I contacted Bill at PHP because I wanted custom tunes and he said because of an intake, I would need to get custom tunes (basically converting it to a Gryphon) so the truck wont run lean. Also, he said that an aftermarket intake won't do squat and if I'm able to return it, I might as well get my money back. (I think he said the custom tunes overwrite whatever hp gains you would originally get from the intake) He told me to do the Gotts mod because I won't need a tune for it and it will give me a slight gain in hp...maybe like 5-6 hp. So luckily, I didnt install the intake and was able to send it back and get a partial refund. Basically, the intake will just add a cosmetic touch to your engine bay...I would say save the money and just get your Evo custom tuned...if you want the intake anyway, I suggest you go to www.stage3motorsports.com I bought it from there for like 300 bucks and used S3M005 as a coupon code...took 5% off my total purchase

Hope this helps

I think they look great.

Im gonna lay it out for you, really simple and easy.

YOU ARE going to gain a small but of HP doing either the gotts or the CAI.
I think the above poster (who may be right, but I doubt it YMMV) that a CAI with a tune to match it will provide more power over a stock no modified intake and about the same as a gotts modified intake.

Its like this, the CAI alone may give you 10Hp, the tuner alone with custom tunes may give you 15 HP, putting them with each other is NOT going to be 15+10=25. More like 15+5=20 net gain.

This is how Bill explained it to ME and how I understood it, what he said MIGHT have been different or I MIGHT have misunderstood, or maybe some one else understood it differently.

Facts.

CAI's
CAI's can cause you to run way to lean.
are costly.
Look good (IMO)
Provide a (slight) power gain
Sound good (IMO YMMV)
Need to be paired with tuner and custom tunes to ensure safety of engine(lean issues).

Stock intake
Cheep (you already have it)
looks to big and bulky
Quiet, little to no noise.
flow restriction.

Gotts modded intake.
cheaper then CAI
Provides similar level of power opposed to CAI
Required NO retuning.

Take this all in consideration, the biggest area of improvement is in the under hood looks and sound if you like the CAI sound, some intakes "drone" more/louder than others. Some people (like me) like the sound, others hate it.

I have a incab video I can provide if you want it.

So, if you want to tidy up and add some bling to your engine bay, add a small amount of power, and have no problem spending the money (and like the sound.) GO FOR IT.

If not, just go with the gotss mod.

Comparison photos.

Did my gotts mod this morning, home depot only had ugly white pipes though so it REALLY needs a paint job. Works fine though

EDIT: damn that thing's noisy whenever the engine twists. i can hear the piping scraping against the hole in the sidewall that it sticks through every time i hit the gas. i'll have to cover the sides of the holes with foam or try wrapping tape around the pipe.

Compress the billows then tighten the hose clamp,
this is to put pressure on the pipe into the fender.
