'10 F150 - Magnaflow Catback Drone

2010 F150 w/4.6l 3V

Installed a Magnaflow 16523 catback last night. Fit and finish were OK, one of the pipes that goes over the axle had a slight flare to it, preventing it from sliding into the tailpipe section. I had to cut off about 1/4" off the end so it would work, sort of a PITA, but overall the install was easy.

Once bolted up it looks great, just like the factory F150 Harley exhaust. On the outside it sounds great. Deep, aggressive with plenty of volume.

BUT this kit has some serious drone to it... I've installed a couple Flowmaster Force II SIDO systems, a Gibson SISO and SIDO on various trucks and had a 14" SIDO Magnaflow on my previous truck. Also did an 11" Magnaflow muffler swap on stock piping for an '09 Chevy. The drone on this kit louder than any other catback system I've installed and I'm pretty surprised. I've been a Magnaflow fanboy since installing one on my old truck... nice volume on the outside, but fairly quiet on the inside. I've never had any issues with drone using Magnaflow mufflers, so I thought going with this kit was a pretty safe bet.

At this point I'm probably going to take this kit off, sell it on craigslist and do a simple muffler swap using the stock pipe. I really like an exhaust with some volume to it, but this drone is just too much.

Well I suggest going with a Borla muffler (Borla Pro XS or Turbo XL), I have no drone what so ever and that's with a si/do. It has a nice and deep aggressive sound to it, I think better than magnaflow but that can be argued.

I'm surprised to hear this I have very minimal drone on my truck with magnaflow muffler.

I'm actually thinking about going from my 18" Si/Do to a 14" SI/Do

I'm really surprised as well... I've had nothing but good experiences with Magnaflow mufflers.

What size is your muffler?

This is the muffler I have, case length is 19", and overall length is 24".

Look through the website if you want to stick to the SI/SO muffler type, here is all the borla type mufflers they offer, and they are pretty much the cheapest you can find:

Here's a sound clip from OmegaRed and this is pretty much what mine sounds like:

The Borla Pro XS SI/DO will be quieter than the SI/SO version. The dual is 19" and the single is 14". These are the only sizes with Pro XS line.

Thanks for the info guys.

I pulled the rear section of the tailpipes off so now its just dumping over the rear axle and there's NO drone. I can definitely hear the exhaust note, but theres no drone now.

Its possible the drone may be caused by the way the system is designed. I'm going to try the Borla muffler and go from there though. I'll keep you guys posted.

The drone is caused by tailpipe length, shape, and size. Not the muffler.

was the tail pipe exiting all the way out from the truck. had a friend who's tail pipe didn't make it out for enough and it had terrible drone, extended the pipe just a coulpe inches and no drone what so ever. the exhaust on his was bouncing off the inside of the bumper and would resonate all the way through the cab.

I think both you guys may be right...

The tips were tucked in from the body by maybe an inch. I'll try to have it come out a little more if I can and go from there.

That is part of it yes, but a quieter muffler will drone less too.

x2. The bigger the muffler body on a straight through and packed case muffler will limit droning, but the tailpipe exit does effect the sound, especially by the size of the tips.

'09+ trucks are much louder than '06 - '08s and way louder than '97 - '05s due to free flowing cats, and 2.75" mandrel exhaust.

I disagree with your statement.

I back this statement up with case in point: Stock exhaust system = no drone. Same stock exhaust system where the only change made was to remove the stock SISO 31 inch muffler and replace with a 5X8X24 SISO Maganflow muffler onto the existing stock system. Moderate Drone appears at 1700-2000 rpm range. 5X8X24 then replaced by 5X11X22 Maggie which reduced drone to a minimal level.

The muffler has everything to do with the drone.

FWIW the muffler on my Roush Off Road exhaust (dual rear split exit) I have on my 05 has a 9.5" body, and I have no drone. I experimented with this setup once and removed piping to make it a dump over the axle and the drone was unbearable.
