faux duals
faux duals
Has anyone done this...I have been looking for someone to put true duals on my 2000 5.4. I thought I found someone but now cant get in touch with him. Since I have the 4 cats, I was hoping to be able to remove the rears as well as install the duals. I am wondering if I was to install headers as planned, go in to the existing, stock Y and cats, then after the Y, Y back to 2 pipes in to 2 bullets, if the sound might be more like a true dual setup. Dont misunderstand me. I understand this is NOT a true dual setup but wouldnt it be closer than running through a typical cat back system where everything goes through one muffler? Maybe I am way off base here but just looking to get as close to a true dual setup as I can if I cant find anyone to do the real duals. If there was someone anywhere near the Central NY state area that anyone knows of that would be interested, I would also be open to a road trip!

My '07 has a cat back, sounds great I think. Different than my '77 with true, distinct, no crossover, duals, but every bit as good.
Two Y pipes will be very restricted. Have it done the proper way for your engines sakes and for the best performance, and sound gain.
Sorry to say it, but yes, that is the best way.

Most cat back systems are basically 2 Ys. One from the block to the mid pipe. The other, "reverse" Y is where 1 pipe goes in to a SI/DO muffler and then exits as 2. My theory was to replace the SI/DO with a Y pipe. Seems like it would basically be the same restriction. OK it was just a theory, maybe not a good one but a theory. Back to the regularly scheduled program already in progress.

I had a 2002 and I put true duals on it with an H pipe. I didn't touch the cats, as each bank of cylinders had their own. Ran true duals all the way back with mufflers. Sounded great, but didn't help in the power side much. The free flowing exhaust really help in the upper rpm ranges like 4000 and above. They really don't help that much at the lower cruising rpms because you don't need as much flow down low where they run at highway speeds.
But they make these engines sound really good, and that is why I have done it in the past.
