What muffler would give me the best sound for my 1998 4.2 v6. I was thinking about a flowmaster. just looking for some advice on what muffler would be the best for a deep sound.

 

barely any. The Flowmaster would be your best bet.

I have a friend with a v6 Ranger, we installed a 50 series flowmaster, and it was pretty disappointing. He replaced it with a cherry bomb kit and it sounds 100% better. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "throaty" but it's definitely a LOT deeper than stock or the 50 series flowmaster.

 

its basically inevitable that you wont get your 4.2 to sound anything like a v8. For one, the firing order of your motor is a lot more even than a v8 is, resulting in a smoother sound, higher sound. once you understand that it wont be a v8, you should move on to realize that loud exhausts and v6's RARELY work. IMO, flowmaster super 40 is TOO LOUD of an exhaust on a v6. It sounds like a coffee bean in a tin can at anything above 2k. Your best bet, albeit quiet, is a flowmaster 50 series. I had both on my truck, and the 50 sounded better. The 40 just sounded like a v6 hands down.


And i love loud exhaust, believe me. My mustang sets off alarms.

also, look into the IMCO exhaust, sounds great for a v6, much better than slowmaster. still a little ricey

Try the single chamber flowmaster. It is the 10 series. I have this on my 4.0l inline 6 on my jeep. I think it sounds good for being a 6.
