Well...I finally did it. I was tired of hesitation when it was warm, and I assumed that my AF1 was sucking in hot air. The other day at school, it was 91 degrees. After driving across town to Walmart (12 minute trip), I popped the hood and felt the intake. I could keep my hand on it no longer than 2 or 3 seconds - it was so hot!! I couldn't believe it! Not only is my air being sucked in from the engine bay, so its pretty warm already, but the intake tube was roasting! Cold air intake? I don't think so. So two days ago I did the Gotts Mod. I removed the silencer as well. No comparison. She sounds beefier, has more power across the board, doesn't hesitate, and looks neater. I think a BIG thing for these engines is genuine cold air!!!

If anyone is debating, go Gotts. $12 of stuff from Lowes and I have what is better than what my AF1 was.

Nice I was wondering about switching CAI's to the AF1, but since drone seems to be a huge issue with my truck I decided against trying another CAI and am just having a new tune built for the stock intake. I was hoping it would still feel somewhat like it did with the CAI on once I make the switch.

I did do the Gotts mod with mine using the Spectre flexible intake hose, definitely noticed an increase, mostly WOT.

I was wondering if anyone has experimented with anything larger than a 3" tube? It appears that you could possibly use a 4" diameter tube.

 

+1 for the Gotts Mod! It was the first thing I tackled. Like said $12.00 worth of parts later and you saved yourself money and heart ache. I was considering a switch to something like an AF1 but after seeing this, no doubt in my mind I made the right choice just Gottsing it , thanks!

My drive home is 20 min of stop/go traffic. As soon as I got home I popped the hood and put my hand on my AF1 CAI and it was barely warm. I could have left my hand there all day. I suppose the difference is that mine is not left open to the engine bay, its a true cold air, the filter sits in a custom made air box that only gets air from outside the engine bay.

 

K&n makes the best kit for the new f150. they have the largest heatshield to keep that engine heat away, I have a 2004 with the 5.4 and I got close to what k&n's dyno test. Plus I picked up like 2 mpg.

If you guys like your 'heat shielded' filters open to the engine bay thats great, but I just can't see how. I have had the lid off of my S&B and just today was sucking in air at over 160* in stop and go driving with a 98* outside temp. With the lid on and a similar day friday it was still 145*. Cruising down the highway the temps got down to 125-135 but nothing liked I expected/hoped to see especially with the lid on. And there is no way I could leave my hand on that super heated intake tube In my venture I popped the filter off and it was seemingly just as dang hot on the inside as it was outside both days.

I have a hot days, a hot engine bay, and an intake sucking hot air closed and open.... Plus the hotter it gets the more hideous the drone from the intake becomes...

 

Because its a correct statement. On a naturally aspired V8 truck, there is no performance benefit on any induction tube greater than 3" dia.

 

I know - maybe we can make it a sticky. Or a commandment?
