ROUSH Cold Air Intake
ROUSH Cold Air Intake
Gents,
I have a Roush CAI on my '07 5.4L. It's been on there a couple of months.
I have a pretty loud resonance sound at about 1900 rpms when I am lightly accelerating (like when I am leaning in on the throttle a bit to maintain constant speed while going over an overpass/bridge). If I punch it and the rpm jump above 2000, the resonance goes away and I get that cool induction sound.
I am wonder if any of you guys have a Roush CAI and have the same sound? or know what I can do to get rid of the sound?
I am probably going to get a custom tune by a local speed shop fairly soon. Anybody think that will clear up the problem?

A custom tune will help but pretty much all CAI's have some drone on these trucks. I've used an S&B, a K&N, and now an Airaid (identical to the Roush CAI) and all of them have drone. However the Airaid has much less than the others. I got used to it and then I put on a louder exhaust to cover the sound but I understand that some people don't want to do that.
Try the custom tune and if that doesn't help you'll either have to get used to it or take it off.

Like 08FX4 said its drone, and its annoying
I currently have a hell of a drone with my S&B that it appears not even tuning can take away. My only real option to cure it is to head back to stock and hope the gotts mod is worth something.
I love the power of a CAI w/ custom tunes but can't take the drone! In my case the exhaust system doesn't really help, nor does the tall gears, heavy tires, etc....
A tune might clear it up, it might not. I thought a tune would clear mine up but the minute the tune and the CAI came together it was still there to my disappointment. However live tuning may be a bit better for clearing up the issue.

VMP, Troyer, or Power Hungry Performance (PHP) if you have an Edge.. Do a search and you should be able to find out all the information you need on them... I've heard Troyer and PHP have long waits (although I haven't been keeping an eye on them recently)
Depending on what programmer you have (if you have one, SCT Xcal 3, Edge, etc...), email one of the many respected tuners here and have them email it to you, after you provide the specs of your truck.. and there ya go..

I have always thought Troyer was normally back logged too!

Well I don't have a programmer. Might have to put it on the list if it helps out power

If your a visual guy and like to see guages and do not have a ScanGaugeII then an Edge might be good, otherwise the SCT XCal3 would be a great choice too..
and like FX4Life said, Troyer and PHP are usually backlogged.. VMP I've heard is a quick turn around.. I ordered straight from their site and I got it in about a month (around Xmas time.. but this was last year..)
Oh yeah... put it on your list, especially if you are doing a CAI... In my truck, it was Night/Day Difference with the VMP Tune over Roush's... Blown away by the power, shift points... mileage didn't really change much since I like to hear the S/C

That and a dyno tune is $$$. LOL
I have a AEM CAI, I really can't understand why people hate the sound of a CAI on these trucks, mine sounds wicked.
Changed the exhaust note too, then when I got my custom 93 tune from PHP, it was like night and day.
Only thing is my AEM intake starts making noise around 2,100 to 2,400 and then its all exhaust.

offroadpower27, is your end goal to get rid of the intake drone at that 1900ish rpm?
are you supercharged? if so intercooled or non intercooled (big flat filter or round cone)?
if you are n/a then as you said you just want more power then you have to take intake noise with that power gain just as if you want a better flowing exhaust the result is louder exhaust.
i have tried a stock intake with a k&n, a shaker ram air and now supercharged with a k&n open cone filter all changed my engine sound. i love the wine on 9.5#'s of boost at WOT, but for long trips i just use the speed volume control on my radio.

One sound occurs during fast acceleration, WOT, high rpms, etc. and it is a loud air induction sound that I think is really cool. The term "drone" could be used to describe this sound.... I guess, but to me, it is noticbly an air induction sound. Again, I like this sound.
But the sound I was referring to as a "drone" in my original post is much different than the cool air induction sound. I wouldn't call it louder, just different. It is much more of a vibrating drone sound, and it almost seems as if the engine is not getting the air that it needs.
I recently talked with someone who said that the truck should be tuned, because sometimes these CAI's can cause the truck to run lean because the ECU isn't adjusting to the additional air correctly.
I was referring to a dyno tune. I have a friend that owns a speed shop with a dyno. He will do it for me. He's not so much of a friend that it will be free........ I still have to pay full price. $400, I think he said.

My truck is naturally aspirated and the Roush intake has a big round cone filter.
Gentlemen, thanks for the comment thus far. Keep them comming if you can shed additional light on the topic. I still plan to get the tune, but I would really like to wait until I can do my exhaust, and I don't have the money to do it all right now, but I'll let y'all know what happens when I do it.
