Catalytic Converters
Catalytic Converters
I am replacing my cats and have a question that I'd like to get a knowledgeable answers on instead of just opinions. I am looking at a few different brands for direct fit cats, Bosal, Magnaflow and Catco. There isn't a huge difference in price between the 3 but the money saved could be going towards the o2 sensors that need to be replaced. The only brand I know anything about is Magnaflow. First I'd like to know if anyone knows anything about the other brands, any cons to why I shouldn't purchase them. Also,do hi flow cats do anything? I've read that now a days the difference between an aftermarket hi flow and factory cat have little to no flow difference. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks
Thanks
High flows definitely have increased flow over stock converters but the performance difference is negligible from what I've read -- especially if it's a newer truck that they're going on. The main benefit is increased volume while still remaining legal.
I'm not sure about the other brands but I know that Magnaflow converters are well built and pretty inexpensive.

OEM 2 cat systems flow well enough, but resonate alot of sound. Hi-flow converters varie by model, offer little, to no resonation at all. I'm aware of those manufacturer's cats except for Bosal.
i'm running long tubes with my factory cats and factory o2 sensors we just extended them. My truck still sounds great. Honestly unless you're going boosted and plan on pushing well over 400hp you are plenty fine on the factory cats. Glad that you still want to keep your cats, these trucks need the back pressure and without it they're even a bigger turd off the line.
Motors don't "need" backpressure. Thats just your imagination. What your calling backpressure I would call a bottleneck. You need exhaust gas velocity and proper tuning to accomodate it. Otherwise everyone with longtubes and true duels and no cats would be on here asking why they spent all that money and can't pull a trailer from a stop.
This idea of needing back pressure is an idea from the carb days where a motor couldn't increase fueling to acount for the exhust gasses exiting more quickly and people burnt up valves. If you can find which cat flows the best, I would go with it if the price is right.
