Just like the title asks. If I run true duals with an x and put it out the side in front of the tire or dump it before the axle, will it hurt torque vs running all the way out the back? Seems unlikely to me. I know the X needs to be as far forward as possible but I have heard the muffler should be as far back as possible (for reasons besides drone).
All depends on yer definition of 'short' - as in "nothin' but the manifolds" short
Back pressure... don't insult me lol. I know better. I read elsewhere (forum to be un-named) that dumping before the axle would produce less torque than running out the back. I called BS and got flamed. Just wanted to see if I was the crazy one. What I am wondering though is if there is any benefit to getting the muffler as close to the axle as possible besides reducing drone. Logically if you run it out in front of the tire the muffler needs to be a foot or so closer to the front. I SERIOUSLY doubt if it did make a difference the butt dyno would tell, but maybe someone else knows better.
I'm off to go order my reverse flow exhuast pump... it increases back pressure 20% and gives 300% gains in low end torque and comes with free muffler bearings!!!!!!!

I think the only difference other than drone might be a difference in "pipe gurgle" sound. I'm not completely sure on this one. A guy would almost have to cut his mufflers off and move them forward to see if there is any difference in sound. My Flowmasters were under the cab. When I put on the Borla mufflers, I moved them right in front of the axles in hope to produce more sound from the mufflers, instead of the pipe gurgle. Again, I'm not really sure, but that was my theroy, and I went with it, and I'm very happy with it!
So I guess the next question I need to figure out is if there would be more drone dumping it as close to the axle as possible with the muffler as far back as I can get it or doing a lightning style exhuast where the muffler has to be a bit farther forward. Either way, it would be a magnaflow muffler or mufflers depending on if I did two round mufflers or a DI/DO.
It is a myth. But if you are running no exhaust ( nothing after Y pipe or downbanks ) you will not have great torque. If you have 3' of intermdiate pipe after it you will have a complete exhaust in most cases. Lightnings barely have 4' of intermediate pipe.
