my point exactly punisher
another thing to add, heat retention is a plus for retaining velocity pressure, now stainless is not only good for those that live in the salt belt, but it also keeps the heat in the pipe -promoting exhaust scavenging,as well as having pipes mandrell bent along with using x-pipe as punsiher stated, little off subject,i did back to back dyno runs on my cbr1000rr, switching from an oem header to an oem header that was jet hot coated resulted 2 hp and 3 ftlbs of torque, now this was only on an engine that was putting out 155, but you see my point...phil

Stainless and mandrel is the ultimate system, though its the most expensive route to go, but if you are real serious about your exhaust performance and long lasting you get what you pay for.

ok i understand wuts goin on but it brought my hopes down LOL....i wanted a exhaust setup more or less like darrenws6 (true dual 2.5 11" mufflers xpipe) cuz of the clean sound, i know u lose power on the lower end but i never figured it puts strain on the motor and tranny...so it wud be better for me to just get a 14" maggie si/do with 2.25 or 2.5 piping from the muffler? dont wanna go off topic but i just learned something new here

You could still replicate my exhaust and have it all 2.25" after cats with 2.25" mufflers, it will sound the same, possibly with a better idle. Months after I got my exhaust done i've kicked myself for not going 2.25"

I've been reading several of these exhaust threads........

Much talk about a 2.25" vs 2.5" dual

I'm I wrong..........the only bolt on 2.25" dual is MagnaFlow???

I really have not seen any other.

So.......for a 2.25" dual..........is it MagnaFlow or custom?? Are these the only 2 choices are am I missing something??

I've always been told that if you're running N/A and a true dual setup with these V8's, go with 2.25" for piping, which is what I did for my setup.

edit: and don't buy a bolt on kit, just buy the mufflers, x-pipe, and cats you want, then just take it all to a muffler shop.

dont waste ur money on a "bolt on kit" (cat back kit)
custom make your own kit with whatever mufflers you want with either 2.25 or 2.5" piping.

Also I think he was stating a bolt on true dual kit, they dont make those, true duals is all custom fabbed. Only one company sold true dual kits for these trucks & I gforget which, but their muffler sucked.

I custom made a true dual kit in my old 05 4.2l running dual glasspacks and 2.5" pipe since that's what comes stock diameter on the factory exhaust. Def had popping while of the gas at highway speeds but sounded great driving around town. Troyer performance installed a roush exhaust with 3" mid pipe to my long tubes. Here is a article that might help you on some exhaust theories but I'm under the impression cat backs on these trucks are probably the best idea for power gains.

i am running true dual 2.25" straight pipes with an x-pipe on my 08 f150 5.4L. its a good tone and volume, not as much popping as ud think tho, it needs to be at a really high rpm befor it poppes and it only does it when decelerating.

Hey Darren,

What kind of x pipe do have on your truck? I have a similar set up. Stock manifolds, no cats, 2.5" true duals, H pipe, 40 flowmasters, and 3.5" stainless tips.

I was originally going for the mustang sound. I had the flowmasters cut off right behind the cab. SOUNDED BAD ***! The problem? Too damn loud pulling a trailer. So, I decided to run tips out the back. Now it sounds good inside, but cracks around 2k and again around 3k RPM. I'm not liking the high pitched crack. I'm putting an x pipe on this weekend. I'm hoping that it takes out some of the crack and gives it a little better growl.

Hey guys I to am looking to do a exhaust for my 04 4.6 reg cab short bed truck. Heres my plan to buy a x pipe, (2) magnaflow mufflers and take them to a muffler shop and have them do the rest custom 2.25" true duals.

Couple questions

1. I really want to limit the "popping" drives me crazy. Do you think this set up will cause much popping?

2. Should I buy some hi flow cats? Are they worth the money?

3. What X pipe should I buy or where from? Something good but dont want to spend money I dont have to.

Thanks in advance

James

My installer cut holes in the intermediate pipes and welded them together, its not the greatest X pipe but it does work to my surprise. The X pipe will surely cut back on the popping and crackling. You will also probably feel a slightly better low end pull.

Sound like you have a real sweet system, I sure would like to hear how it sounds. I've heard a few SI/DO 40s on these trucks without cats but not a true dual, though they still sound wicked.
