How close is too close?

I just got myself a full sized spare tire. I have 2 sets of rims. 305/40-22 on one, and 265/70-17 on the other. Both are 31.6" tall. I got another 265/70-17 tire to put under the truck as my spare.

I put the spare in the stock location under the bed and I noticed my Roush Off Road crossover pipe was about 1 1/2 of an inch away from the tire. It's the crossover pipe that runs across and parallel to the axle, so it's almost directly in front of the bottom edge of the spare. That got me to thinking about the My spare caught fire!!! threads. :o

So to you exhaust experts, is 1 1/2" enough clearance between the spare and the exhaust?

A reference image of the old spare size and the crossover pipe.

I always heard you want at least an inch of clearnce with exhaust pipe. However I hear your concern about the tire being so close. I don't think it will catch fire unless it was pressed right up against it for and extended period? As long as its all tight and doesn't wiggle I think you are ok? You could try to fab up some sort of heat sheild though? Maybe try duct taping a peice of card board to the tire near the pipe and run it for a while. Check the cardboard and see if it shows any signs. If it isn't burnt then your probably ok?

I agree with ab46501. I'm no expert but it seems like a logical thing to do. I felt bad clicking on this earlier and not being sure what to say... I hate that.. a lot of views and no responses

It's definitely more than an inch. I guess I'll drive it to work and check it when I arrive.

the heat rising from the pipe might thin out the rubber on the tire if its close like that..maybe, maybe not.

You'll be fine. My tailpipes are both only a 1/2" away from my spare, perfectly fine.

Nope, had them already because this was an issue in the past with someone else. The right pipe is more 3/4" away, but the left one is no more than 1/2" away, no issues at all.

You can always make a heat shield stealth, i heard you are pretty crafty with the metal working stuff.

Get you some heat tape they use for motorcycle pipes. Its not expensive and it will protect the tire. Better to be safe then sorry.
