yes, its called the catalyst. It also will make your exhaust illegal. What year is your truck? If you have a 1997 - 2005 ( early model '05s only ) you have 4 converters and cutting the rears out is a general cheap and effective way to louden up sound, but should not be done if you have emissions, and dont have a hook up for inspection.

Would it be cheaper to swap out the 4 for 2 high flows, than have the 4 punched? Also can you get money back for old cats?

No because removing the stock cats then installing the hi-flows and re-mounting O2s is near $200 in labor ( $100 - $250 depending on charges ). Plus the price of the cats which is usually $134 - $168. Having just the stock cats hollowed out might be even more labor because all 4 need cut out, then beaten out, then re-installed, and its an 'illegal favor' so it wont be cheap. And straight pipe replacement is better than hollowing the cats out, The wide open interior of the cats will disturb the flow velocity. Best off going with hi-flows, or no cats.

With the economy getting harder again scrap prices will rise so scrapping 4 stock cats may bring in $100 or so in.

Gonna cut my rears off tonight (that sounds strange) and make my O2 sims too.

I stopped by the guy who put on my Magnaflow and told him I would be developing an exhaust leak on both sides and asked him how much for the repair. He says, "Gonna cut off your cats huh?" I replied "I never said that! But yeah." He quoted my $80 for the job. Is that reasonable?

Jesus $80 for just 4 2.5" welds? That sounds high as all hell, but he is doing a favor for an illegal job so I suppose its fair.

Not if you have access to a sawzall and spend $20 into pipes and clamps, then have a friend weld it shut.

I have to cut them off and he's gonna weld in the pipes. I thought it was pretty high too... but it will welded and I wont have any leaks. I just made my 2 O2 simulators... whew! my soldering skills have deteriorated! Gonna go remove the O2 sensors now and splice 'em in...

Shorty headers would give you some more volume, not a whole lot, but they will.

Best thing for california for loud exhaust is ducktape megaphones on your exhaust tips, I guarantee that will pass the smog testing

I just realized... I should apologize if anyone thinks I hijacked this thread... If you do, I'm sorry... didn't mean to.

The passenger side O2 sensor was a piece of cake... the drivers side was a f_cker... in fact, I couldn't remove it... so I soldered in the sim while on my freakin back... oh yeah... that was fun!

The only thin left to do is cut the cats out... can I expect as much fun removing them with a sawzall as the O2 sims???
