exhaust newb ? rate loudest to least loudest

so ive done my research and thought i knew what i wanted. The youtube videos are so inconsistent and now have less of an idea of what any exhaust sounds!

on a scale of 1-10 with Flowmaster being a 10, where do magnaflow, mbrp, gibson and other that apply.

im looking for a low growl sound and does x-y pipe, lenght exhaust tip or where the exhaust tip exit determine how loud it is?
does adding an intake affect the sound?

any other suggestions are welcomed.

i was leaning towards magnaflow with volant intake and now im confused?

where would i be able to hear exhaust in person?

flowmaster 44
and the magnaflow is #16612 3" tubing, 4" tip

& does that mean that any cai will require me to get a programmer? what happens if i dont?
is that the same as what people call a "chip"

if you do not get a custom tune for any intake changes on a 3 valve modular ford engine you risk running lean and blowing your engine

a canned tune "chip" is going to make the situation worse

back to your exhaust question: I prefer the sound of the flowmaster I think a 50 series would be the same volume as the magnaflow you mentioned... with the flowmaster 40 or super 44 being louder, where and how do you want your exhaust to exit?

I have a 50 series flowmaster that sounds pretty good but is family/neighbor friendly on those mornings I am running a bit behind

I'll consider this question being those manufacturers popular/commonly used mufflers. Ok loudest to calmest,

Straight pipes
Dynomax Bullet
Flowmaster 40 series line
Roush Off-Road cat-back
MBRP cat-back kits
Borla Muffler series
Magnaflow muffler series
Bassani muffler series
Gibson mufflers

If you decide to go the custom route and want to buy the muffler and tips, run it 3" from the Y to the muffler inlet ( 3" ) and have it exit as you wish. Before passenger tire is usually louder inside and a hint louder outside due to less tailpipe travel, and the mufflers are under the cab. Longer length tips help make a deeper hollow note, and thicker body tips make the sound more metallic and echo further. I have 4"x18" tips 45 degree bent out the back and love them.

If you wanna hear these kits in person go find someone thats done them. Other than that as long as your computer has good speakers, or you have good mp3 headphones would could get the general idea of exhausts over on Youtube, Streetfire.net, and myspace videos. I use a high quality camcorder for my videos so mine will really give you a good impression of how it would sound in person.

I fully agree. Roush Off-Road is the best. If you dont like the tips or tailpipe location of the out the back kit you can always change it, or live with it. Roush Off-Road is available in a dual rear exit before pass tire also.

I also have a 50 series delta flow and it has a nice deep ton alomost as good as 40 series but the interior level is what is the biggest thing, almost half of what the 40 series are. I also have a volant cai with power core filter.

So I have a Magnaflow / KNCAI system. No programmer (yet). Are you saying that I am running the risk of engine failure if i DON'T install a programmer? Don't get me wrong, that's next on my list but I'm kinda starting to get worried after reading this reply. Just how risky are we talking? If you are sayn "dude get a programmer right NOW don't drive it without" then I'm on it ASAfreaknP. Let me know what you recommend here.

BTW> On the exhaust question, I think you will be happy with going Maganflow / Flowmaster. I have the Magna and it's what my installer called "it's loud, but old man loud" I laughed at this but I would have to agree after hearing it the first time. Loud enough so people know you are coming down the street, but not obnoxiously loud like NHRA wannabes.

if you do not get a CUSTOM tune or a canned tune designed for your engine with a CAI then yes you are risking engine failure

I'm not trying to jerk your chain or make money for anybody I just don't want to see you end up replacing your motor

if it were my truck it wouldn't move until I removed the K&N, installed the stock intake and reset the ECM (unhook the battery and turn the headlight switch on for about a 1/2 hour) and the K&N would not go back until I had a custom tune for it to run safely

Borla XBR-1 may be the loudest muffler I've ever heard in my life.

is the roush off road street legal in CA?

is it worth paying more to get the pipes coming out behind the back tire Or buy the MBRP exhaust since on your sound scale they are next to each other?
