Drone....

Drone....

I just installed an 18" single 3 in 3 out maggie with a 4 inch tip exiting at stock location. Sounds great, but I have the dreaded 1900-2000 drone. I thought with that setup, I'd not have a drone. Is it possible that maybe the muffler is installed too far forward or rearward or something. At this point, I'm very disappointed. Any thoughts?

I think the only way to evade the 1900 drone is to get an OEM muffler. They're designed to muffle drone in the 1900-2000 range.

What are the steal pieces welded to the top of the stock mid-pipe for? Drone?

you talking about the heat shields?

No mine had two pieces of 1/4x2x3 in welded to the top of the pipe that gos from y-pipe to muffler

Ive noticed this with older fords to,just pieces of steal welded to the stock exhausts.I always assumed they were there to cut down on vibration but not sure im not a engineer

I have no drone and did the same thing you did minus the 3" piping. I also installed the 14" maggie instead of the 18". I made sure that my tip was 2" past the side of the bed because I think that with the bed vibration from the exhaust at those lower rpms, you can hear the effect in the cab. I got this tip from another member on here who ran a 3.5" kit and it worked for him also. Check my gallery and i have 2 vids inside the cab and all you can here are my tires.

Can anyone else verify that this could actually be the case? Well, you're one with an aftermarket and no drone. I researched the heck out of my choice of setup and this is disappointing.

I second on the question about the end of the tip, does it go past the body edge or is it underneath?????

quite odd to hear from a magnaflow guy. i couldnt even tell you if i have drone at 1900, because if i do i dont notice it above my music or roadnoise or passengers. and i have true dual 14s.

I put the very edge of my tip about 2" outside where rear quarter panels rolls to a 90 on the bottom of the truck. To be honest, I have no idea if this is why i have no drone, but PimpRohr did the same with his MBRP system and he claims to have no drone from a 3.5" setup. So i figured it wouldnt hurt to try. Seems like it works since I dont have any and neither does he. There again, maybe we just got lucky. Who knows but you might try it. Seems like it would be a cheap fix and then you could be happy with your exhaust you know.

Drone is usually unavoidable, but where the drone occurs in the rev range is controllable. My last truck was a Titan, and it had horrible drone even with its stock exhuast system. After countless threads, complaints, attempts to fix, etc, we at Club TItan all discovered that the length of the tailpipe was a big culprit (something about resonance, think "tuning fork")

On my Titan, I cut about two feet off the tailpipe and the drone moved up substantially in the rev range. It was still there, just much higher out of typical cruising range.

Not sure if you want to lose your nice tip, but here is a pic of the stock exhaust on my Titan hacked off. I did put a little piece of extra pipe on there to point it down. Sounded great, and no drone below 4K RPM's. Many others tried this with both stock and aftermarket systems, with the same good results.

Just a thought...

That's pretty close to where mine is now. Maybe I'm just overly conscience of the noise. Everything up to that point is a low hum, then at around 1900 is just a little higher pitch. I went on Corsa's website because they have "no drone" technology and it seems that drone comes from the muffler itself (the echoing inside hitting the under body of the truck). That's just what I got from it. Maybe I'll try a piece of rubber (like those mats in garages or rubber 18 wheeler mud flap) somehow attached to the underside of the truck above the muffler area as a deadener. Maybe I'll goof around with it this weekend.

Any aftermarket will be heard inside after awhile. Good prevention for interior droning would be have the tips straight out the back, and muffler fully under the bed, not any under the cab.
