4.2 True Duals?
I have a 01 4.2 5spd manl. F150 I have K&N CAI and 33" tires with 3.5 Spindle lift. I've been wanting to put an exhaust on my truck but cant decide weather to get a cat back system SI/DO or make it true duals DI/DO? I know making it true duals is more money but would it be worth it? (take in consideration that if i make it true duals ill prally get HI-Flow Cats and Headers) any info & suggestion on which way to go would be great, thanks.
Well im not really looking for the sound, I guess i want to know if the extra money for the DI/DO is worth the power gains over a cat back SI/DO? just want to hear which way you guys would go with.
Yeah, i will also get the x pipe and as for the headers they will probably have to be shorties because thats the only ones they make for the 4.2 and i want the exhaust to come out infront of the rear wheels. Does anyone know how big the difference would be between the two set ups? if its minimal then ill just get the catback SI/DO
difference would be minimal, as for shortie headers...i have heard they are a waste but i cant say considering i have no personal experience, but if your not looking for sound then a SI/SO is gonna be the best way to go if you wanna keep your torque
You wont gain much performance with true duals unless you have the heavy induction, tune, and other performance modifications to boost horsepower to match it. And true duals is quite a questionable taste on V6 to me, I think the best sound on an V6 is the least amount of cats possible/Hi-flow cats, and a chamgered SI/DO muffler of some kind ( Super 44 Flowmaster would be a good choice, 2.5" single in, 2.25" dual out )

I paid around $380 to get my true dual exhaust back when CB extremes were $53 shipped.
$106 for my cherry bomb extremes
$25 for my mandrel bent 90*
Around $250 for the install.
This was a few days after I got it installed and was around 45* that day. Sorry for my 2 year old showing me the camera.

and that's why I don't like this site.
I'd just get a SI/DO muffler or a SI/SO muffler and Y after it.
I feel that a true-dual system would be a waste on a V6 --- From a performance and tone/sound standpoint. True-duals make a V6 even raspier.

I was'nt sure about putting all that money into true duals but with your guys's comments im going to go with the SI/DO with Hi Flow cats, since i need to replace a cat anyways. Increased MPG's would be nice, since i only get 12mpg now, but if that means loosing torque, its not worth it =)

It's not like we want to shoot your ideas down, but from an economic standpoint, it's not a good idea to go with true duals. The SIDO will help you out as long as you keep the pipes at a reasonable diameter.
I know about having an underpowered V6 in a Ranger and wanting more. I wanted to get an exhaust, CAI, and a tuner to get it to produce some decent power, but after doing the math I realized that I was going to throw $1000 for about a 20 horsepower increase. I just gave up and drove the thing stock til I could get my hands on a V8 truck.
