There is not a vehicle code section specifically for airbags or hydraulics. It can be articulated, however, that those modifications make a vehicle unsafe. And, there is a specific vehicle code section for an "Unsafe Vehicle"

Vehicle Not Equipped or Unsafe

24002. (a) It is unlawful to operate any vehicle or combination of vehicles which is in an unsafe condition, or which is not safely loaded, and which presents an immediate safety hazard.

(b) It is unlawful to operate any vehicle or combination of vehicles which is not equipped as provided in this code.
Amended Ch. 696, Stats. 1992. Effective September 15, 1992.

I have responded to a call where a truck was disabled in the traffic lane because the airbags went out and the frame was on the concrete. It couldn't even be pushed out of the way. Now, imagine that truck on a freeway at night and it becomes disabled when vehicles are traveling at 80+ with drunks behind the wheel. It is not difficult to articulate to a judge how that vehicle is unsafe with those modifications.

There are brands out there that don't include a hook-up for that vacuum hose. I doubt you have seen them all. Also, just because there is a place to hook the vacuum hose to, it does not mean that people always install it the way it is supposed to be. There are a ton of rice rockets that have a small air filter attached to the engine where the vacuum hose is supposed to be.

Couldn't the same be said about your lift?

Definitely. Or, a vehicle with only two lug nuts attached and 4 or 5 missing. It is a very ambiguous section.

When standing in front of the judge, though, a defense of "well, what about vehicles with this or that installed...." is not going to cut it.

It's just an open ended law. Although, I won't be one having to make that distinction because I don't have bags or a lifted vehicle.

That is a blanket vehicle code that just covers every vehicle on the road as well as the State's asses. Lame.

Oh and anytime I need help I call the Cops. I respect them and their jobs. I treat them always with respect and the way I would treat any person of service whether its law enforcement or military etc. If you dont like the laws of your state, or the country, then move.

It's good to hear. Too few people respect the law or the people who enforce it. I'd rather them be on my side than against me. I figured if you can't beat them, join em !!

Ive been pulled over atleast 5 times for various reasons. Only once was I ticketed because I was doing 50 in what I thought was a 45 but was a 35. Every single cop I showed the upmost respect to and every single one showed me respect.

When I was 16 I was pulled over by a sheriff on the freeway for doing 115. He got me out of my car and scared the **** out of me. Dropped more Fbombs then I ever have in my entire life. He let me walk and didnt even give me a ticket. To this day I never speed on the freeway other then 70-75 in a 65. I learned more in that one hard lesson then any other time by a police officer. Sure he was a **** and probably went a bit far, but its exactly what a 16 year old needs with a BS attitude.

I had a 86 Tbird I painted:

I got pulled over atleast 3-4 times by cops just asking me where I was going and what I was doing. I know they were just being ****s cause I was stupid and painted my car like a cop car. (However at the time AZ cops were Blue and White and are now black and white). They never gave me a ticket or anything.

Again no disrespect was given, and other then being late to work no harm was done. I knew I was dumb for the paintjob and light. So everytime I was pulled over I had it coming.

Every cop except for the Sheriff (I was to shook up) I shook their hand and told them to stay safe. How anyone can disrespect a person who could one day lose their life for you is beyond me.

wow. interesting reading. i dont have a "race car" type vehicle but i got friends that do and they get pulled over all the time, so much that they gave it up. in the years that i've had my truck i've never been asked to pop my hood, only this once. after reading all that in those links i think he told me to pop my hood because he saw the 4 air bag gauges underneath my dash. i need to customize something to hide it when i get pulled over. anyway, i'll never give up my truck, im turning it into a show truck, it will no longer be my daily driver so screw the laws. say what u want. ima lowrider and as of last saturday a Dragger. haha

I did what I set out to do and post the information so you and others would know;
why you got stopped (truck fit the profile with body mods and paint)
why you were asked to pop your hood (looking for go fast mods)
why he looked in your bed (looking for nos)

Good thing I did not spend the time to find and post anything else that would help you like

what to expect and where to find more information and help
how to defend your rights if/when a situation like this happens again..not needed based on your anyway comments
