Borla setup questions

Hey yall I don't post much but i do read almost every thread. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new exhaust kit (thanks Mr Bush for the stimulus package). So I just wanted to clear up a couple of things. Tell me if I'm right:

1. Borla muffler only. Increased low end torque and minimal volume increase
2. Borla muffler and single exit. Increased low end torque and significant volume increase
3. Borla muffler and dual exits. Decreased low end torque due to dual exits. High volume.

I'm leaning toward option 1 or 2. I want increased performance and volume without the drone and resonance inside the cab. I purchased dynomax for my last truck and it sounded like i was in an airplane.

4. Does Magnaflow have an option equivalent to number 2 above?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

Stock muffler is a trash can, litterally. Magnaflow and borla are basically the same, both are high flow and good for power.

With a single in dual out or single in single out youll probably get the same results. If you go true dual without major power adders keep the pipe small to maintain some back pressure and youll want an xpipe. Other wise you wont notice a difference between just a muffler, single out or dual out except noise level.

Main reason to get a cat back system instead of muffler is to get like stainless steel piping or something that wont rust or as quickly as stock.

If it was me I would just take off the muffler completely and put in straight pipe. Sounds real good and it cost next to nothing and makes good power

I thought that dual exits alone caused enough back pressure to decrease performance when compared to SI/SO

No, it really just makes a more balance sound. Like I said, you wont notice a difference between muffler swap, si/so, or si/do. If we went true dual then yes you would have backpressure problems. Otherwise with the muffler it wont make any difference other then sound.

Also badass sound clips! that sounds real good! Get some long tubes for that bad boy!

Its not back pressure, its exhaust velocity and scavaging that involes the pressure and flow.

But yeah any Borla muffler will sound good. Borlas are louder than Magnaflows. Magnaflows are just as deep toned but much cheaper.

ok but with that said i imagine that a si/do maggie would be louder than a si/so borla. also, it seems that the 11 inch maggie is the most common.

Yeah si/do is louder, but performance wise they are both the same as long as the si/do is not dumped.

I never really heard much about the 11" Magnaflows, all I ever heard about was 14" and 18" mufflers keeping people happy but I figured it was still quiet for me. I almost have the Roush Off-Road loudness with my 11" bodies though!

Shorter the mufflers the louder it is.

Exhaust velocity is a tricky thing. Ive heard you want the exhaust to escape from the cylinders as fast as possible through longtube headers and high flow cats, but then you want the pipe to decrease in size as it reaches the end of the system in order to keep the exhaust gas from backing up into the engine or something like that. Im not real clear what the idea is, however it made sense at the time haha

You will not find a higher quality muffler/system than Borla. It is much higher quality than Magnaflow, I've had both.

The volume of the muffler depends on size....as mentioned, the smaller the muffler, the louder is it. Borla and Magnaflow each have their own sound. IMO the Borla is smoother and deeper sounding, while the Magnaflow has more if a tin-like sound to it. I have a custom setup - Borla Turbo XL muffler with a side exit before the rear tire with a 4" tip. I'm completely happy with the sound. It's not loud or annoying but has a nice deep rumble with absolutely zero drone.

I believe more people buy Magnaflow over Borla due to price....but you get what you pay for. Roush is also made by Borla.

I wouldn't say the Magnaflow has a "tin" sound to it... it'll get people thinking it sounds ricey or something, which it defiantly does not. I've got the 16616 setup and I love it. Low, quiet rumble at idle and a deep throaty sound when you get on the gas.

I agree the Borla is probably a nicer setup, but for the price you can get a Magnaflow system for its a worthy mod for a good price.
