desperately need MPG help, take off stock muffler?

I got a 2007 Screw FX4 and I drive 113 miles everyday to work, and get around 18 MPG's. I am saving up for a Maggie Exhaust but want some loudness NOW!!! Can I just remove my stock exhaust and let it flow more freely, will this help with MPG's and will it make a decent sound? Probably it isn't a perfect sound but if it would help with MPG's ill take it.

THanks

I'm not sure about MPG and all that, but if you want the sound REALLY bad aren't mufflers like $50-$80? You could have a shop shoot a second of weld on there or something until you can get a full system run or something.

Sound will be awesome, MPG increase will be negligible.

I thought about that, a FlowMaster commercial just came on... But I'm thinking I want to save that 50-80 bucks for the whole kit. Is it legal to take off the muffler and just run straight pipes? I live in CO... tried looking up stuff on the internet but couldnt find a decent answer... cause if it was legal, shoot ill just take the muffler off and call it good...

It'll probably sound awesome for the first week and than you'll hate it. It's just flat out loud, no tone, starts to sound like crap. Mileage will be the same, I really doubt you'd see much from any exhaust set-up.

It probably won't help MPG and they will probably go down, as some back pressure is needed. Also, it probably won't be long before your given a citation and be forced to make the truck legal again. Besides... do people still think obnoxiously loud vehicles are cool? Every hear a vehicle with a LOT of horsepower? They have a low, deep rumble... it's not loud.

I'm not trying to argue but I'm sure I'm not the only person who has heard a vehicle with a lot of horsepower. It's pretty dependent on their mods and their exhaust set-ups. I've heard some cars that were so loud that my ears were ringing for days after a dyno pull. Also, I'm not too sure the removal of the muffler is enough of a loss in back pressure to cause mileage to go down. The cats are going to be still in tact which should keep enough back pressure.

modified motors that have a deep rumble usually have an aftermarket exhaust system to assist achiving that deep rumble. Vehicles with open headers sound quite different.

I tend to agree that if you were to run your truck stock, with no muffler- it would louder but would you be happy with that sound long term? I dont believe that sound is the desirable tone you want. Its certainly not going to sound like your trucks got a modified motor. Its just going to sound loud and not real good. You can get a Magnaflow muffler for less than $90 (maybe get the one with dual outs) and run the dual tailpipes out in front of the passenger rear wheel like the Lightning that way if you have the windows down, you will be able to hear it nicely. I bought the muffler and had Meineke weld it up for 25 bucks. If I were to do it again, I would try a Dynamax Bullet

I got an 07 and hacked the muffler off. To say that you wont like the sound is hard to say. I had mine done with 97 miles on it, now almost 10K and I will NOT change my exhaust for anything. Some get tired of it, I love it. MPG wise, negligable. If anything it could go down, because of the sound I tend to slam the skinny pedal alot more
So MPG wise, no it wont make a difference. Sound wise its awesome, I love it. And about being legal, I have not been pulled over for sound at all. And as far as I know azmidget has not either and he has had his done for years. All I have to do is 4 years from now is add a muffler to pass inspections. Then off it comes again. Thank god new vehicles in Az dont have to be inspected for 5 years.

It may only drop if you romp the gas often. OEM mufflers have baffles in them so removasl would be better off. Instead of a Magnaflow cat-back,. just buy a si/do muffler and have tailpipes installed by the shop, oh, and buy some tips for it to exit nhowever you would like. Nothing better than a custom made exhaust that sounds better than a cat-back system and flows better.

Stay away from baffled/chambered mufflers as they block the flow path for exhaust gases to escape, therefore lowering fuel economy. Stay with straight through mufflers like Magnaflow.

Should not feel any tougher or slower and economy should remain the same, or lower slightly. Ford Modular V8s perform better with their exhaust scavaging and velocity, or as others like to refer it as "back pressure". Best bet for economy would be to stick on a si/so Magnaflow or Borla. muffler.

Not hurting a thing. I was considering doing that before I had my work done.

My 11" Magnaflow X piped true duals perform the same as the stock single 2.5" 32" muffler, surprized me quite a bit! I thought for sure there would have been a loss.

Those are three different (yet related) things, bud.

Like its been said, you get a nice loud sound, but your MPG probably won't change. Heck, you are already getting 18 MPG. That's pretty darn good for these trucks.

I have true dual straight pipes with the stock cats in place. Before the truck is warmed up the exhaust cackles/pops when you get on it. However, two minutes later, the cackling is replaced by a nice deep, loud rumble. I can't see myself putting any type of muffler on this truck... I THOUGHT about pulling the 4 stock cats and having a couple Magnaflow highflows welded in along with some Bullets or Flowmaster 10 Series... But that's after the lift and wheels.
