open or closed???
open or closed???
O.K. Now I understand no real problem with a PROPERLY oiled filter. Still have not decided on brand. Looks are nice, performance is nicer!!
Can anyone shed some light on difference between an enclosed CAI and open. It seems that a closed unit hooked up to the fender would draw more cool air than an open unit which I imagine is exposed to very hot air under the hood. Please clarify for me. Also I see little in the threads about Volant CAI? Any good??
Thanks

its doesnt. once you are driving 50 mph down the highway, there is more cold/cool air coming into the engine compartment that the CAI is taking it in. also you still have the factory air hole on the fender, so the CAI is pulling the air in from that as well. CAI allow more air to be pulled in, rather than a stock air box restricts how much air the filter can have. both have their pros and cons.
Pros and cons both ways..
As someone who's used an oiled filter (AF1) for a year now I can tell you that, first off, cleaning and re-oiling the thing isn't much of a hassle. Takes maybe 3 minutes altogether.
Important to get any excess oil off of the element after re-oiling, but a shop-vac can do that in about 10 minutes.
So say 15 minutes of maintenance every 15k miles or so.
Anyway, oiled filters aren't the huge bitch some make 'em out to be.
