Air Intake: Wich is better?
Air Intake: Wich is better?
I have a 2004 F150 (new body style) with the 5.4L V8, I have a Magnaflow dual exhaust and am looking around for a air intake. I had a K&N on my last truck (a 1998 Ford F150 4.6L V8) and was very happy with it. Iv been looking at a few different intakes and am currently looking at the AEM, Volant, and S&B. Which one of these would be the best to get or what would you recamend? Iv also heard that the stock intake from Ford does very well on its own and I have to say it deffinately does, so would it be better to keep the stock set-up? Just tryin to get opinions to help me get the best, Thanks.

I really want to know this to, ive read hundreds of post on here and fordtruckworld and talked to hundreds of ppl, Its really based on oppenion, on this site people love AF1 3 and 3.5 with troyers tune, not sure if thats cause hes a sponcer, but on others they love Volant with the ram air tub, and everyone i talk to loves volant, its just a hard choise, ive been trying to decided for months now, but the diffrence between the 2 in very little if any. O ones a true cold air intake and one gets air from the engine bay, ones meatle and ones plastic. sorry for the spelling how this helps
For me its just personal prefrence. Im not looking to rip up the 1/4 mile. Here is the S&B on my truck.
Trending Topics
AF1 - search for dyno plots & results in 'SKI's posts - hint: the very best intake advice is actually in the Chips forum, lol
Stock is quietest and if you do not wish to add a tuner, probably the best compromise....
The IAT issue is a dead horse - inconsequential in the real world. Good BS bench-racing material, though, lol.
Regardless of what you may have read - the Volant lies down @ high rpm. You may not notice or even care, which is great - but some do. And the Volant requires tuning to correct for it's effects on MAF TF - well documented. The manufacturer play ostrich on this point - perhaps you've seen my, ah, 'discussion' in this regard, lol.
Your truck - your call. Just do the research first. Rather than just relying on the posts and opinions, dig for the actual test results, and call some independent performance vendors - ones who do installs, tuning, upgrades, and have been around a while and, most importantly, know the F150 platform. I have no dawg in this hunt - I currently run a stock intake. But I did my homework, so when I pull the trigger, I know exactly what product I will be installing, and what the requirements and consequences are.
The most tragic posts here are the ones where a fella buys an intake because of a buddy or an ad, or because it's cheap, or looks cool, then asks how it stacks up. Of course by then it's too late, and human nature being what it is almost guarantees the dude or dudette does not want to hear anything but positive feedback - classic denial.

Wow AF1 really shortened that pipe on the 3.5 DIA setups .. No more long hook..Or maybe it's just the first time I seen a 3.5..
I like 05supercrew's S&B - That looks sweet, very clean look ...

I personally would not go with Volant. I have one currently and it is rattling the he** out of me. The rattling is obnoxious, annoying, and makes my truck sound like it is falling apart. I am about to sell it and get an S&B.

I got the 57 series for the dyno was higher gain then the chrome one (77 series)
it gives the engine AWESOME sound I haven't really noticed any MPG gains mainly because I cant keep my foot off of the pedal
I previously had a K&N FIPK2 on my 01' 3.0 Ranger and it never failed me So I went with K&N again. Some people also say that the K&N causes your engine to run lean but I've had my one for 1 month and counting and I haven't had any problems so far.
