On this mod how did you guys stop the PVC pipe from shifting when getting on the gas? It doesn't shift much, but enough you can hear it creak on the medal of the fender wall it's fed through. Did you just stuff the PVC into the fender so tight it doesn't move all when the intake flexes or did you leave the hose clamp slightly loose so that remainder of the stock intake can slide up and down the PVC as needed? Please let me know if I'm not making any sense.

 

I just tightened the hose clamp all the way. The original snorkel piece wasn't flexible, so I wouldn't suspect there is a need to allow it to slide on the PVC.

Is your PVC pretty snug in the fender? I can still pull mine out using my hands and I've tried to force it in tighter, maybe I just need to take it apart and lightly tap with a rubber mallet to really get it snug.

 

Yep, it fits perfectly snug all the way to the lip of the inside of the fender wall hole. I used sewer pipe so I didn't have to sand or file the PVC walls down, and it fit perfect. It's tight enough that I have to rotate it a bit to get it out.

I think another reason it doesn't go anywhere is because of how long I cut the pipe. I really had to wedge the pipe into the intake pipe to make sure it stayed in there. I cut it just long enough to leave the 3 small holes in the bottom of the tube opened.

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but you did replace the bolt that holds the intake down, correct? I know there is flexing even with it bolted down, but it's not enough on mine to make the pipe budge.

Your never going to get the list complete. There was a whole bunch of us that did this mod back in 04-05. About a hundred of us got the original EDGE tuner, and most removed the snorkel at that time at the recommendation of Bill. Some put the PVC pipe in, some didn't. Really didn't make much difference. I still have the pipe I used on mine, setting on a shelf in the store room. I eventually went with the airaid jr setup which is a very clean, functional setup. Gets air from right behind the headlight, much like the 5.4 superduties.

 

I have it tightened down, but the bellows flex slightly. I'm not talking much, maybe a few millimeters at best, but it's enough I can hear it against the fenders metal. After rereading some of the threads I went back and compressed the bellow all the way so we'll see if that stops any of the flexing. Thanks guys.

 

I haven't done this mod and I am not even sure it applies to a 2010 5.4l but how about this idea. Take a small vacuum hose, split it length-wise and then use it to form a "gasket" around the opening to keep the pvc pipe away from the metal. Yes/no?

 

I think the compressing of the bellows actually took care of it, at least for now. If that doesn't work I may try the hose idea as a gasket of types or even just a thin layer of electrical tape pending on what I can squeeze. Thanks again guys.

 

yea now i had the same problem with the creaking...what i did is went and bought the double sided tape, kind of like the weather stripping, and did one strip around the PVC and then shoved the PVC back into the fender well and haven't heard it since!
