Thanx for the info, Gotts. This is a great mod! I had the truck out tonight, and she's not only running smooth, but the throttle response is distinctly crisper. Now I can't wait to tackle the silencer. Hell, I thought nothing would ever be as addicting as my bike, but this truck is a blast. After looking at all the high priced CAI setups, I was very happy to stumble on your mod. I like being able to leave the filter in the closed airbox and recieving a performance boost for 25 bucks. Real easy sell with the wife, too. Lol! Here in Ontario we have sniffer tests (emissions). K&N claims their CAI intake doesn't affect the sniffer test, so I assume this one won't as well. Hopefully not, anyways. Thanx for bringing this to all of us.

So last night I was sitting in the garage, and decided to tackle the silencer. I figured after reading about the glue that it would be a bitch to get off. I tried prying the ends with limited success. A buddy of mine stopped by and suggested wrapping the whole box in towels and putting it in the clothes dryer to soften the glue. After a bit of reassuring the wife no damage would come to her dryer I did just that. We then chilled with a few adult beverages and waited. That sucker came out with minimal persuasion after that. Hooked her back up, crossed my fingers for no CEL or other annoyances and fired her up. Everything works fine, and I swear there's a little more crack to the pipes when you rev it. Throttle response was always good on this truck, but I truly believe it's "crisper" since doing the whole Gotts mod. One thing I wonder about is the disruption of air where the box is molded. There is a hole in the silencer that allowed air to travel into this small compartment. Does anyone know what purpose this serves? I wondered about installing a curved 3" pipe in the area of where the silencer was located to get a straight run for the airflow. Any thoughts?

jbrew did that and I honestly don't remember if he noticed any difference or not

he is now running a volant CAI (sealed) that he got for a great deal but he ended up modifying that also for better performance

Thanx for the quick reply, Terajerame. It probably wouldn't make much difference, and I'm real happy with the way it is. Of course, it might be fun to mess with if I'm sitting bored one day.

OK I do not see any were and i read everything i could find and all the articles. But i do not see anyone who has a 05 and up f150 with 4.6 that has the intake mod. So does anyone know about weather this will work on the newer motor, will it respond the same with the improvments?

If I'm not mistaken the 4.6 has a cone air filter that is right at the edge of the fender. Unlike the 5.4 where the filter in on top of the engine. It will not work because you would have to relocate the filter closer to the intake in order to do the same thing we are doing with the 5.4. A friend of mine has a 4.6 and it didn't look like it could be done. You would probably have to get a premade CAI for the 4.6.

Truck is a 98 with a 4.2L V6

i followed this thread and it went pretty smoothly.

heres the stock intake snorkel.

the snorkel just pulls off and your left with

the airbox has a tab shown below and i notched the pipe like so.

i cut the pipe to about 6" and shaved it down with tool shown

i just filed the pipe down and tested it until it fit.

then put the pipe coupler on with about half the clamp on the end that attaches to the airbox.

then put the new pipe in the fender and then the only difficult part you have to put the end of the airbox into the coupler and use a little force to get it into its mounts.

once the airbox is in the coupler just tighten the clamp and it creates a seal

after that just replace the filter and your good to go.

any questions feel free to ask.

no mines the same as your 5.4s, my snorkle comes out the same way as yours does by having the to tabs you have to pry on the inside., ether way i know i can do it tho, but what about running lean, will it run lean or be fine?
