Intake Air Temperature
Intake Air Temperature
What is the normal intake air temperature range. Then I guess what would be the best and worst temperature. I'm getting the dashhawk and it can read the intake air temp so I was wondering what was good and bad. Thanks
There are a lot of factors that can decide what the IAT is. Some of them could be outside temperature, what kind of intake you have, is there is a heat shield, and driving on the highway versus stuck in traffic.
I was stuck in traffic today and it reached 124 degrees or so, but once I got on the highway it significantly decreased. Outside temperature was 87 and IAT was reading a steady 94. This was with my AEM Brute Force intake.

It is not a matter of safe temperature, in a non inter cooled supercharged truck it is not unusual to see 180degrees+ aircharge temperature, what happens is that the computer removes timing and changes the fuel curve as the aircharge temperatures increase to protect the engine, so the higher the aircharge temperature the less power the engine produces.
I Just data logged my truck today, it was about 90* outside, I stopped on the side of the highway, started my data logging, it read 128*, i nailed the gas, about 14 seconds later when im at 90mph its down to 98*, I Let off and cruise at 80mph and its a steady 95-98*

The more I thought about it, this is true. I just wanted to make sure that my JLT Ram Air intake wasn't pulling in too much hot air temp. So far my average intake temp fluctuates from 70-94 depending how long I run the truck and how fast.

I went from a K&N FIPK to the JLT an saw a major increase in AIT. The JLT is ALWAYS at least 20 deg highter than ambient while driving. In traffic or low speeds - forget about it. I'm going back to my K&N which, even w/o a heat shield was much cooler in traffic.
When I go back to the K&N I will be adding a custom air box to take advantage of my new ram air hood for improved flow and even lower temps.
