04 F150 5.4L looking at Volant Intake w/ ram air???

I am thinking about purchasing a Volant Intake with the ram air. I have never used a intake system and do not have the slightest bit idea of what to expect. I have heard it increases horsepower and gas mileage? Also how much louder is it? Does anyone have this system on their truck and can give me the low down.

Thanks!

I would advise against the Volant unless you have a moneyback guarantee that after you dyno it, you won't lose power and torque.

There was a member here that said he had it dyno'ed and it made less power and torque than stock intake. The only way he could make it about 2hp adn 2 lbft over stock was by removing the Volant lid and having the hood opened during the dyno testing.

Thanks for the fast response. I would have thought that the Volant system w/ Ram air would have performed better than that.

I just read through one of the threads regarding intakes. It sounds like AF1 and S&B is the way to go. I got kind of confused though. I really only want to get a intake. I do not want to have to get a programmer as well. Does anyone know what my options are?

No problems with the Volant unit. I did not opt for the ram air tube.
Milage gain of 1-2 mpg. Get 17-19 city/hwy. Just ordered Edge Evo.

Hi.

Well, in a nutshell intakes like the 3" AF1 and now apparently the new S&B do not require a tuner. Same case I believe for the Airraid.

But if you read further, a well repscted F150performance shop (TP) has tested most of the intakes available and has gone through the immense effort of develoing MAF transfer functions (one of the keys to air/fuel control) for several of those intakes - including K&N. This suggests there is a risk in running them without some compensation via custom tuning. Add the fact that a lot of 04+ trucks have been shown to run lean from the factory & you have a bit of a dilemma.

You probably should invest a little time and call Mike Troyer to walk you through all this - he'll do a much better job explaining it than any of us will .

As a start, read his posts on intakes, etc in the Chips forum. There you'll find tests where the Volant simply lies down past 4,000 rpm.

FWIW, for safety AND max power you can't beat an AF1 3.5" coupled with Mike's custom tuning.

Cheers
Bubba

he didn't say bog down- meant lies down over 4k as the volant falls flat and doesn't make the power over 4k that the af-1's do

That is the normal misconception from people who don't have the intake. That's what I thought he was getting at. As far as the AF01 creating more power, I'd have to see it for myself.

If you are lucky, the folks that actually attended a recent dyno day & swapped their Volants for AF1's on the spot after seeing the difference will check in .

Or, if you can, attend a Dyno day & see for yourself.

Or, Call TP and discuss.

I dunno ... i sense that you would not be convinced, no matter what.

Post Volant

I have a dyno run scheduled the last of this month. I'm interested in the rusults with my Volant. Of course, legally I don't run down the road at 4000 rpm in top gear.

well drock, as far as intakes go, my experience is most of them are the same, either open or closed. go with a closed(s&b perhaps a volant) if you plan on offroading. if not go with the open element (af1, aem, k&n), they all deliver ruffly the same power give or take 3. My main goal was finding an intake that wouldn throw and CEL codes, and the k&n i just installed hasnt given me any trouble and gives me a nice little boost. As far as the ram-air hood, if your thinking about getting a decent one, it will run you around $800 after paint to match and everything. But it does give your truck a mean look and provides and aggresive stance. However after doing this, the rake on my truck became increasingly annoying, which is why I am installing a lift within the next week. Hope this helps
