I am going to get an air intake for my truck. I want something that gets me better gas mileage with more horsepower. I am thinking about getting either a K&N or an AEM. Which one is better in your opinion? Also, where would be the cheapest place to get one of those? Thanks for the help guys.

 

Well your not going to find a clear answer here. Intakes are mainly perference...

K&N
Pros- Cheapest of Intakes
Cons- Have to Oil the Filter

AEM
pros- Oil Free filter
cons- More expensive than the K&N

 

so the AEM is the best if you just want to install it and not have to worry about cleaning it?

 

you still have to clean the AEM filter, but you do not have to oil it. They give you a cleaning solution that you dip the filter into and let it dry. After that you are good to go for another 5-10K miles depending on how much you take it off-roading. The AEM is a good intake, I like it better than the K&N I had before. I like having the peace of mind knowing that I do not have to oil the filter. Performance wise the difference between the two is negligible. Any intake is better than the stock IMO.

 

what kind of mileage boost did you get when you put the AEM on?

 

Dont worry about oiling a K&N Ive got um on my car and my truck my car has been 33K+ (installed when new w/49mi) and Ive never even taken it off.
The truck I just installed it recently but they are good for 50K+ depending on conditions b4 clean and reoil. Definetly well over 10K even in the dustiest places.

 

The mileage gains are minimal - perhaps 1 mpg at the most. Your best bet to increase mileage is to keep your foot out of it. With cruise control on flat land doing 65-70 mph I've been as high as 18 mpg. With my foot in it I can go as low as 12 mpg in town though, so it's more how you drive it than what intake you have...

 

K&N all the way I haven't needed to oil mine yet either

 

I agree a properly maintaine K&N is the way to go aem is still ur basic restrive filter design just improved a little K&N uses oil to remove dust and is less restrive better airflow

 

You can put a pre-filer on the filter and go even longer between oilings/cleanings

Plus they repel water...wet filter = bad

AEM should get you 10-15 hp and 15-20 ft lbs. torque. If you go to aempower.com you can see the dyno results to confirm this.

It makes your engine run more effeciently... So more effecient = more power and better gas milage..

However, the better gas milage only comes if you are not steping on it using that extra power.
