Dual pipes vs. dual mufflers

Evening all..

Newer to the board and even newer to truck upgrading. I have plans of slowly upgrading this truck over time and would like to know which direction to head. I have left a few posts on here and everyone has been very helpful. The question I have is that this truck is now in need of a new exhust system, there is a leak in the passenger manifold as well as the muffler and pipes are pretty rusted through. I went to the PTryoer site and found some very nice toys that I would like to upgrade with, and my question revolved around what exhust to get. Which is a better system to look for and why? A single muffler with dual exhust, or a dual muffler setup? The truck is a 97 F-150 XLT 4.2L regular cab, ext bed, 4x4.

Would I benifit more from the dual mufflers or the single with some of the different setups as I have read a litle about here ( X Y H etc).

THanks

It's all personal preference but I went with a Flowmaster DI/SO system with 2 1/2" inlets and 3" outlet. It got got rid of the very restrictive factory Y-pipe, gave me dual exhaust to the single muffler, and a larger single tailpipe in the factory location. Cheaper than twin mufflers and twin tailpipes. Gives me the same performance results, but I wasn't looking for the "noise" or "look" of dual exhaust.

I also recommend the flowmaster setup for your application. THere are several ways to do it, a custom shop can help you work out the details.

I recomend a magnafkow if you want Tq and Hp, but if you want it to sound aggressive go with a flowmaster 40 series.

I cannot see any reason to put a dual muffler system on the 4.2 motor. I would think a Flowmaster 40 series original not the delta with a matched to the cat inlet size and duals from there would be more than enough for that motor. If you need cats get the single high flow instead of replacing the 2 or 4 that are under there now. Manifolds you are on your own, I'd stay stock, I don't think the 6 will do much more without some serious upgrades to the whole motor.

Just my opinion...

My F150 came with a rig job of an exhuast system that is falling apart and needs to be replaced. I want the dual setup also exiting behind the rear tire.

Could you give me some insight on how you accomplished this? I'm looking at the install PDF and as far as I can guess is turn out and possibly cut the tail pipe sections and install shorter exhuast tips.

+ if you have a picture/s that would be very helpful me and others looking to do this. Thanks

I ordered the SI/DO cat back # 15749 and when installing it I made it a split rear exit myself, the tail pipes are 2 pieces, the first one goes over the axle the second one bends then goes out the rear so I cut the second one just before the bend and then put the tips on (there like 18' that came with it) and had what I wanted, looks great, hope that helps

look in my gallery for pics on it
