Thumbs up Single to Dual or Dual to Dual? That is the Question!!

Ok....I talked to magnaflow today and I can't wait another 6 weeks for the exhaust system for my truck to come out...so I'm going to take it to a little shop to get the magnaflow muffler single to dual rear with chrome tips for 250....I can get stainless steel tips for a extra hundred bucks they're 3.5x24 or 28 long...I also asked him about a perfomance differance between a single muffler to a dual muffler system....he said it was alot better performance wise....and he could do it with the SS tips for 350...If anyone knows about performance difference...cabin droning...I'd like to know.....He said it wouldn't drone inside...and the price seems fair but what do I know.....I asked him about SS pipes but he told me the tips would be the first to rust out and since they're so long and SS I shouldn't have a problem? I'm looking to do this tomorrow morning, any advice would be appreciated!!

I asked a similiar question here not long ago. MaxMitchell and Fleas did a really good job giving me excellent information, I suggest you read this if you haven't already.

Other than that...

I went with the dual exhaust system simply because I didn't want to wait for a different muffler to come in. I have been 110% satisfied with the results. I can definately tell an increase in power, the mileage I am still testing, and the sound is awesome!! Absolutely no drone at all! I have not heard one person on this site complain about a Magnaflow setup droning.

If I were you...I would go with the SI/DO setup, (if you really want dual tail pipes) if you don't care then go with the SI/SO setup. TroyerPerformance has tested all of them and the SI/SO gives you the most horsepower increase of any other system and setup. (See that here

Good luck

So you have 2 magnaflow mufflers ....1 for each exhaust pipe? and from what I read 2.25 pipe is better than the 2.5...even though thats what magna flow has on their 15834 system....No cabin drone?

That is correct! I have no drone what so ever. I went with the recommendation of the local magnaflow dealer and the guys on f150online on my pipe diameter. BTW..they all agreed on the 2.25".

It all depends on what system you go with (SI/SO, SI/DO, or Duals) on what size diameter pipe you need to use. My application suggested using the smaller 2.25" because I actually had two pipes all the way, instead of one.

Before, I couldn't spin the tires at all, unless I got the truck in a bind or something. Now, I can spin them just about any time I want to. So my performance increase was very noticeable, in that regard.

He probably is going to do the y pipe with each going into a magnaflow muffler....So if I won't gain performance.....will I lose any?

I messed up the link (second one at bottom) on my original post. I just fixed it. I was trying to link you to Troyers Page.here I wish I had seen that before I had mine done. Hope this helps

You will gain horsepower, unless he just totally botches the whole job

I talked to several exhaust companies before settling on the Gibson I have now. The one thing that EVERY company I talked to is: Single Inlet, Singel Outlet makes more power than dual tail pipes. I talked to: Gibson, Banks, Borla, Magnaflow, JBA, Flowmaster & Edlebrock. They all said the same thing. I called the actual companies, not a vendor, so I believe they would be truthful considering that duals cost more and they told me to go with single outlet. They all also said that today's V8's don't need anything larger than 3" pipes. Your tips can be as large as you want but the pipes themselves should be 3" for best results. Banks was the only exception to this and they run 4" after the muffler and 3" before.

The Banks made great power but had an annoying resonance inside the cab so I sold it and bought the Gibson. It makes a little more power, I'm guessing 15HP, but is almost no louder than stock. When I called the companies, I asked them the same question: One a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being stock, 10 being bleeding ears, how loud is your system?

The results:
Gisbon -- 2 I believe that, it is very quiet
Banks -- 4 Sounds awesome when you floor it, made great power but had the annoying resonance
Borla -- 3.5
Edlebrock -- Doesn't have anything for the 04 F150
MagnaFlow -- 5 Recommended by Troyer Performance for best power. Unless they have tested all other systems, I really don't see how they can make this claim. I think they are a great company and plan on buying the Xcalibrator soon, but I don't see how they can say that Magnaflow makes the best power without testing everybody's system first.
JBA -- 4
Flowmaster -- 3 to 8 depending on the muffler you choose

Maybe this helps?

KC-10 FE out...

Thanks for the info....I don't want an annoying sound....Are you sure that the sound of those dual aren't annoying in the cab?? I don't want a drone in the cab......But my guy wants to charge me 350.....Your's was 276 I wonder if this was to do that yours was a side exit and mine is a rear exit.

Actually if you will read that link that I gave, The 4th paragraph clearly states that they did test every system. So there ya go.

Troyers Statement: "This is the F-150 exhaust system you've been hearing about. We spent 23 months testing virtually all of the "name brand" cat-back exhaust systems on the market for the Ford F-150 platform, in SISO, SIDO & DIDO configurations. This Magnaflow was the only F-150 system that showed positive torque gains at any throttle position tested, as well as at any rpm. There is NONE of the usual torque loss below 3000 rpm that is so common with almost all truck & SUV cat-back exhaust systems. "

Dolemite,

I swear...I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO RESONANCE (DRONE) IN THE CAB!!! Once it warms up sitting at an idle you can just barely even here it.

I'm sure that has something to do with it and also I may be getting cheaper labor rates. $40/hr. Oh, and one other thing...the price on those tips you were quoted seem REALLY high. I think mine were like $13 a piece.
