Which to Buy, Gibson or Flowmaster?
I see all these wonderful posts on cat back systems and the wife says "go for it!", but I'm not sure which is better? If you can give me some insight I would really appreciate it. Where I live in Alaska, it is hard to get either one and they are both expense for up here. If anyone can help me out, I would be greatful. I'm looking for the best performance and a nice sound.

I have probably the second loudest Flowmaster made for the street and it is remarkable. Quiet compared to glasspacks or straight pipes. Jardine makes about the highest flowing system. I recommend the Flowmaster. The costs are relatively low and racers use them. Why would they use something that did not preform?
I use www.summitracing.com . Thier prices are usually better than what the locals can get me .Alaska?.. shipping should not be that much more if any.

Which Flowmaster would be ideal power/sound-wise for a '99 4.2?

Tina,
We don't have a Meiniki shop but was wondering if the Miadis shop would? Also what about just a replacement Flowmaster on the original system, how would that sound and perform? Does anyone know what size the intake and exhaust pipe sizes are?

I just ordered a kit for my truck from New Era Exhaust Company. I saw the number on here, and can get it for you if you like. It comes with everything you need from the catalytic converter back. It comes with a Flowmaster 40 series muffler, and converts to a dual out the back system, with big slanted chrome tips. It looks really nice and I think it will sound and perform nicely. I'll keep you posted, I should have it in a few days. The whole kit is I think $130.00. Go to http://www.neweraexhaust.com and it is in "Mike's Special's" section.

Deputy,
Please post back and let us know how involved the installation was. Will you be installing this yourself, or taking it to a shop?
Thanks

Todd: try the phone book and call the different muffler shops you have around you and ask if they sell flowmaster. If you are planning on ordering and not installing yourself then also find out if any shops will do that too.
Just remembered your other question: If I had only added the flowmaster and left the existing tailpipe an extra piece of pipe would have needed to be welded on because the flowmaster is smaller than the Ford muffler and it didn't reach to the existing pipe. So after figuring out labor and adding small piece of pipe compared with adding cat-back, there wasn't much difference and I'd much rather have the cat-back than some piece job.

I put a Gibson 3" cat-back on my truck and I love it. It has a nice mellow tone just above stock, and the power difference is absolutely noticable. Installation was easy.

Would a 3" single from Borla, Flowmaster, or Gibson hurt the low-end torque of my V-6?

Doc,
From what I understand, if the outlets flow more than the inlets, torque will be lost on the low end. Duals will lose torque unless they are sized smaller.
Look at a GM with factory duals, the outlet pipes are SMALL.

Todd, the stock exhaust pipes are 2 1/2 inch. I just replace muffler only with a flowmaster 70 series, part number 52571. I cut the pipes at the muffler and had enough left to hook up without buying any extension pipes, but you have to cut right where it is welded. The 70 series is the quietest muffler they make but it has a nice low rumble when you start up and idle and you can tell it isn't stock when you excelerate. You will have to make a new rear hanger. I can't tell you about performance yet, just put it on last night. Everybody else who has used flowmaster seems to be satisfied. From everything I have read, a 2 1/2" system is big enough for a single exhaust on our trucks.
To the post on the flowmaster duals from New Era for $129.00. The muffler they use is a 2 1/4" single inlet with dual out, I think the outlets are 2 1/4" also. You get a reducer with the kit. This is a good prices for the system, it comes with nice chrome tips, but it may be a little restrictive.

Just had the Flowmaster 50 series installed this weekend. At first it was a bit loud for me but now I love it. The shop did a great job turning the system into a "true" dual exhaust, and I can really feel a difference in the throttle response. I'd recommend listening to the various systems in AND out of the truck to help make a decision.
