Which to Buy, Gibson or Flowmaster?
I have the Gibson 3" swept side and I like it alot. The sound isn't too loud, but much better than stock. And the performance gains are definitely noticeable.

Actually our trucks (well at least mine) come with already true dual exhaus, it just turns into one before the muffler. But we do have 2 sides coming down, with 2 converters and everything, so technically you could easily do a true dual job yourself by just cutting the one side before it gets to the muffler, and putting a muffler on that side. I don't know, I never knew this until I crawled under the truck yesterday to figure if I could install this kit by myself or not, and that idea came to me. Would this work?

Deputy, you can do a true dual easy enough, just be sure to install a balance or H pipe and you would probably need to narrow the pipes down to 2 inch to keep your low end. You are not going to be able to do this with the kit you ordered from New Era. It comes with a muffler with a single inlet and dual outlets(see my first post on this thread)

Todd, I just looked at your signature and saw you have a 5.4. You probably could use 3" cat back and not loose any low end. I did a 3" cat-back on a 91 Dodge with a 318 and it killed my low end and towing. A-1 Performance and Flowmaster web-pages both have pipe size charts, take a look. Hey Johnny...in regards to the "H" or "balancing pipe"...I asked the muffler shop about it before they did my install, and the guy said that the two pipes come so close together, a balancing pipe isn't necessary. This was a first class shop, and I'd think that since he would have charged me $40 to put in the pipe, and was advising against it, he wasn't trying to rip me off. Did I get some bad advice? Thanks!

Indigo, Flowmaster and many others recommend a balance pipe on true duals. Yesterday I received the latest issue of Petersons 4 Wheel and Off Road and they have a great article on exhaust mods. They took a stock 350 replacement motor out of the crate and set it up on a dyno and ran it stock and with 5 or 6 modifications, one of which was adding the balance tube. I didn't read the complete article but I think it said they lost some hp and torque when they added a balance pipe to the true dual system. This was done at Flowmasters factory by Peterson staff. So, maybe it isn't needed.........
Indigo,
I saw on another post that you have the 70 series Flowmasters, how do they sound compared to the 50s or 40s. What was your decision to go with the 70s? Did you get the cat-back system from Flowmaster or was it just the mufflers?

Deputy,
I had dual exhausts installed this past weekend from the cats back. The shop used 2 1/2 pipe and Flowmaster 40's. I couldn't be happier with the results. The sound is a nice burble at idle with no noticeable interior sound at cruising speed. My truck is a 99 F150 4x4, 5.4, auto.

JOHNNY...will definitely check out that article. I think I'm past the point of making any further mods to the exhaust, but I like to stay informed.

TODD...*oops...feeling real stupid*...I did say I had 70 series but I was in error and it is really the 50 series. I made a point of asking the shop about them, and the guy told me that they had installed 40, 50, and 70 series and they actually noticed very little sound difference between the 50 and 70's. I am an older guy (40), and I am well past the days of wanting a "window-rattling" exhaust. But I must say that I am extremely pleased with the sound I am getting. You'll get a bit of a rumble in the cab, but not bad at all. Alot of compliments my way so far on the exhaust note. I am running mufflers only. They cut the exhaust out just behind the twin cats and installed new pipes all the way back with chrome tips to give me a true dual system and I can really notice a power difference. I paid $370 for parts and labor and I think it was money well spent. BTW...aside from the colors, your truck sounds identical to mine...good choice! Let me know how yours turns out!

Todd, I'm the one with the 70 flowmaster, they are very quite, just barely louder than stock. I did muffler only, I've got the Nascar Edition which has really neat Roushe tips and I didn't want to alter the appearance. I can't comment on performance yet as I just put it in this past weekend and haven't even taken it out of the driveway. I'm 52 and don't want a lot of noise, just improved performance and mileage. I 've got a 150 mile trip this weekend and will be pulling a tandem trailer with a big B-B-Q pit(will do 20 briskets at once), about 3500 lbs. I'll let everybody know.

Joe Braley: It sounds like you have the system I was thinking about. I also have a '99 with 5.4. I have always had true duals installed on pickups. Most folks on this site like the single in dual out system. Did you notice a power difference with the 2.5 in ch pipes? Did you have an "H" pipe installed? Did the shop cut ahead of the "Y" or split it? Mine has an O2 sensor practically in the "Y". Did the shop move the sensor? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out what I want.
Does anyone have any numbers on the performance increase on their truck by adding aftermarket exaust. I am thinking about putting a 40s flowmaster on my truck with 5.4. Single in dual out. Does anyone have this setup? Did it hurt low end torque any? I pull 6000-7000 lbs. two or three times a month and about 1500 lbs 3or 4 times a month so I don't want any loss in torque. However I want better acceleration and MPGs. Is it possible to get all of this in one exaust system. Does anyone recommend another set up? ps.(how do you edit your signature?)

I have a 99 with a 5.4 and just put single in dual out the rear Flowmaster 40 series muffler on and I love it! Noticed a little bit of low end loss but not much, definite increase in power, don't know how much but now when I step on the gas at a stop light I chirp my tires every time, and I don't mash it when I do this and it didn't do it before. Haven't got to take it to the track since I had it put on, but will let you know if it helps, I'm going to the track in the next couple of weeks. As for the MPG, haven't figured yet, but I don't think it helped because now I just get on it to rack off the pipes! Go with the Flowmaster 40 series, it is the best I have ever owned!
