4X4 Shift Light turning on and off randomly

So it just started happening randomly. I hear the clicking noise as if you engage 4x4 from 2h to 4h or 4l. My 4x4 shifter has been broken off for over a year and has not been used. Now its going crazy. It does not do it when im at a stand still, only when im driving. I cannot find the 4x4 regulator. Anyone have this problem or have suggestions as to check for loose wiring?

BUMP! This is annoying. I unplugged the shift indicator switch on the transfer case and its still doing it...My haynes says theres a 4WD switch behind the right kick panel. I assume by the ECU, but i dont see jack...and there aren't any pictures...(thanks Haynes...) Can anyone help? Im going to go crazy!!

1. If the 4x4 shift switch is broken, you might want to start by replacing that.
- no telling what is going on with the wires behind it, are they closing and opening behind it ?

2. What do you mean by "4x4 regulator" ?

3. Did the haynes manual spell out right kick panel or right side of instrument panel ?
- there is no 4x4 switch in the right kick panel.

Unplugging the transfer case is not going to stop the operation.

Its manual 4x4. The dash light keeps flickering and i hear a clicking noise coming from inside the cab. I tried to research myself and the only thing i found was that a guy was having problems with his 4x4 light staying lit even in 2HI. So there was this sensor on the transfer case by the linkage and was told that, if he unplugged it and the light shut off, the sensor was defective.

What i read in the Haynes manual was for the 4WD indicator switch for manual models like mine. It says to Unplug the electrical connector from the 4WD indicator switch, unscrew, reverse of removal. But there are no pictures so i dont know where its at. Im trying to figure out what tells the instrument cluster to turn the 4x4 light on and off. I havent used 4WD in over a year, and this just started happening recently.

What! It's finally broke in and your going to give up ?

I'm not sure how much info on the GEM is in electrical. I haven't searched GEM here yet, but I bet SScully has mapped that one out a few times.. I know JMC and I have quite a few posts and diagrams in the 97-03 forum.

"GEM" Search that over there FRod and you should find it all fairly easy. What happens is the GEM corrodes from water intrusion,- difficult to find where she's leaking, usually thru the corner of the windshield.

Remove the GEM and check the blades for white spots/water corrosion. This will flip out many systems including the 4x4 elec system.
