Leave engine running - but NOT remote start

Morning all,

I was digging around, and it seems that most police vehicles and fire dept vehicles utilize the kussmaul anti-theft safety locks to leave their vehicles running for an unlimited amount of time, but as soon as you step on the brake, the engine dies.

Just an idea I was having, I rarely need remote start, but I'd sure like to leave the truck running with out the key in the ignition. Yeah I can lock the door, but it is still a theft target.

Kussmaul has 4 options for these devices, but I don't know the ignition circuitry of my truck. It is a 2004 F150. Which of these would work?

http://www.kussmaul.com/fire%20anti%20theft.html

Thanks!

yeah most fire trucks here are push button start anyway, but the cop cars definitely use it. I guess I will have to call them or a distributor tomorrow.

Most police cars and ambulances around here have that. if you step on the brake not only dose the engine die but the horn sounds and the head lights flash. i cant tell you how many times i have forgotten to put the key back in and turn off the security button when trying to leave the hospital or the local WAWA or 7-11 but its a great system

(WAWA is a store just like 7-11 but much better and they are really only here in pa nj del i think there are some in va and md)

Have you looked at the price on the Kussmaul anti theft devices ?

I seem to recall they are right around 100.00 each for the unit.

You are ~ 2/3rds the way to a remote start, you can get a cheap remote start from Travis pre wired with the documentation for ~ 150.00 ( SWAG, total on RMST unit, PATS bypass, and the pre wire is per model ).

I ran across Kussmaul when I was looking for an auto eject plug head for my block heater ( I had driven off a few times with my '01 & had to replace the cord set ).
Needless to say, at $160.00 + for an auto eject plug outlet, I ordered the Remove Before Flight red ribbons ( ~ 10.00 ) for plane intakes and clip it to the keys. Figure I could take the 140.00 and put it towards a new cord set if I forget again ( have not on my '06 ).

Just a thought on the cost side of things, the Kussmaul might not cost quite that, and you are only 50% of the cost of a RMST, but still worth the thought on cost to mod, could be the RMST is an easier route as well ( Travis will pre wire for a small fee, the Kussmaul, you are solo on ).
