Red face SRS light on?

Recently, the little orange light next to the battery voltage readout on the display illuminated. Usually, it would go out after you start the engine up, but it has stayed on. I disconnected my battery and hooked it back up hoping the fault would reset and go out, but the light is still on. The light has a symbol of a passenger with a seat belt and an air bag. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

This is your air bag readiness light.

On pg 8 of the 1998 owners manual..it states "If the light fails to illuminate, continues to flash or remains on, have the system serviced immediately."

It could be just about anything in the SRS...I would have it looked at before it un expectantly deploys or fails to do so when you need it!

Also, Chilton's 97-00 F-150 manual states on pg 6-7 that:
"Any fault detected by the diagnostic monitor will illuminate the lamp and store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)."

Pg 6-8, "If at any time, the air bag light indicates that the computer has noted a problem, have your vehicle's SRS (supplemental restraint system) serviced immediately by a qualified automobile technician. A faulty SRS can cause severe injury or death."

I checked the NHTSA web site to see if anyone had complained about the 98 model year F-150 air bag system...sure enough..plenty! MANY failure to deploy complaints.
