Power Window ???
Power Window ???
I have a 97 F-150 EXT cab and the today the passenger window went down but refuses to go up , and it made for a cold ride for the stepson . WHat would cause that ? The regulator ? Thanks
Could be the switch, or it could be the motor.
Start with pulling the door panel, and access the pigtail to the power window motor.
The directions for removing the door panel, if you need them, can be had from Muth's web site. Just enter the info for the signal mirrors for your MY and download the PDF

The power window motor, there are pictures of the pigtail that you are going to apply power to in this thread :

Apply power one way for up, reverse polarity for down.
If the motor works correctly, then it would be the switch, but could be either side ( passenger side runs through the driver's side. You would want to test the connector to the pigtail by pressing the window switch up and down, to see if the power is at that connector, and reverses polarity when pressed the other direction.

Pulled the motor out and checked it with the battery and some jumper wires , it works both ways , so now I am guessing it is one of the switches gone bad , but could one bad switch cause both of them to not work ?
Either switch being bad can make the window stop working, or it could be the wires from the a-pillar to the door, in the rubber boot.
I don't have the 1997 Power Window diagrams handy, checked the '00 and '03 and they are the same. This might not mean anything, or it could be one of the things not changed.
The Trademotion parts system lists the switches as 97-98, but in the description the years are 97-03 and 04 heritage & Lightning, when looking up a 1998 power window switch. When looking up a 2003 switch, it lists it as 99-03, but the description is the same years are 97-03 and 04 heritage & Lightning.
It might be worth a check, to see if the pins test OK. Use a know good working window to check if the switches operate the correct way

If the switches do test correct, next is to check for a broken wire in both rubber boots from the A-pillar to the door.

Thanks for that info . I will test it Sunday when I can have the first chance . Thanks again that should be helpful .

OK, with an '01 this is the correct info ( 99-03 ) so it should match 1:1 when you get time to test it.
If the switches test OK, then the next thing is to look for a broken wire, but start with testing the switch. It is much easier to pull the switch and test it, vs. removing the rubber boot and running all the wires by hand, looking for a broken wire.

Easy Fix
When I was troubleshooting the power window problem on my '98, I disconnected the 2 wire connector for the window motor that is behind the vapor barrier on the door. When I hit the motor with the higher current and voltage from my battery charger, the motor started working. When the other door quit, I did the same thing. I extended the motor wire and moved the disconnect up behind the snap off molding in front of the window. The last time the passenger window quit, I just snapped off the molding, disconnected the motor wire, hit it with the charger a few times up and down and it is working again. It is important to only connect power to the motor, not to the wiring going back to the control relays because one side is grounded, applying current to that side will probably result in SMOKE. Remember, the window motor is reversed by changing polarity to the motor. These trucks were known for balky window motors. This has worked for me, don't know if it will solve anyone else's window motor problem. Try at your own risk.

You will need to pull the switches, and test them to know which way to go.
Time to check the wires from the driver's side door to the passenger side, if both switches tested good.
I am guessing one of the wires ( Tan w/ Yellow or Tan w/ Light Blue ) is broken.
